Developments in the information and communications technology Internet have bought a significant changes in the way we generate, distribute, collect, access and use information and libraries Digital technologies and their applications have also come into every part of our daily life Thousands of digital collections have been, and will continue to be, created around the world Digital collections and a variety of versions of digital libraries are blooming worldwide In fact, while 50% of students and teachers search information on the web for educational purposes, only 9% still go to the library for the same reason

Online accessibility, a precondition for maximising access control to the information. Digitisation of analogue collections for their wider use Preservation and storage to ensure that future generations can access the digital material and to prevent precious content being lost

The number of broadband subscribers in the country has increased from 63 000 to 260 000. Approximately 30% of Hungarian net users connect from public places: schools, libraries or cyber cafes Hungary has more than 5 000 public libraries and more than 100 public museums throughout the country.

Internet usage among people above 40 is lower than the national average (15%).

Csilla Papp - Digitalization in Hungary and in the Library of Pécs The origin of the library The University of Pécs was established by King Louis the Great in 1367 It was the first public library access of the country, which was founded by Bishop György Klimo in 1774 It was Bishop Ignác Szepessy who restored the importance and the variety of the library Relocation of Elisabeth University of Pozsony (Bratislava) to Pécs. From 1980, as an increasing number Faculties opened at the University - the Teachers' Training College, the Faculties of Arts and Sciences, Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering, the Institute of Adult Education and in 2000 the integration of the University of Medicine and the Illyés Gyula College of Szekszárd - the faculty libraries naturally became members of the university library network.

Csilla Papp - Digitalization in Hungary and in the Library of Pécs Mission statement of the Library of PTE The Library of University of Pécs, as a Library open to all, serves the training and research conducted at the University of Pécs and takes part in the teaching of information culture. It collects, catalogues, explores and provides to readers the professional Hungarian and international literature of its fields of interest, both in traditional and in electronic form. The Library cooperates with other libraries in the system of information transfer and supply.

Csilla Papp - Digitalization in Hungary and in the Library of Pécs Few facts about Klimotheca Its name is a tribute to Georgius Klimo, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Pécs Concentrate our efforts on materials of Hungarian interest, and especially, works that treat our region Public digital collection of 40,000 scanned pages, Klimotheca in early 2004 Simply provide a table-of-contents service to ease the navigation within documents. The materials are scanned with a resolution of 300 DPI. This will allow later conversion of pages from the image to the text format. The website serves 600-700 visitors per day.
