4. Warm Up Place your homework on your desk: 1.Adverb Worksheet 2.4 Sources Identify the Subjects in the sentences by underlining them. Draw a squiggly line under the verbs. Remember, the subjects are the “doers” of the action. ▪ John liked to run on the smooth track. ▪ Liz was driving the red car slowly. ▪ Will you leave me behind? ▪ Ana took the hard test at school yesterday.

5. Week 3 Close Reading Requirements Beyond standard annotation requirements, please complete the following: "Charles Dickens" 1.Write the number of the questions beside the portion of the text that best supports your response. Then, highlight the text. 2.Annotate the word choices and portions of the passage that communicate how the author feels about Charles Dickens. 3.Highlight the act of “listening to the rats” mentioned in the fourth paragraph. In the margin, explain the image created and summarize why this is important to the passage.

6. Week 3 Close Reading Requirements Cont. "Will's Journal" ▪ 1.Annotate components of tone. After each entry, briefly summarize the entry and use a tone word to capture how Will feels. Then examine tone consistencies/changes. Compose a statement which identifies a connection among the tones. ▪ 2.At the bottom of the passage, compose a sentence which explains how Will feels about saving energy. Annotate portions of the text that specifically support your statement. Connect these portions to the statement by drawing arrows from the evidence to the statement.

7. Individual Practice - Vocabulary English I: ->Make flash cards for unit 3 in your vocab books. English I Honors: ->Make flash cards for unit 4 in your VCR You have 15 min. The rest is homework.

8. Group Practice – Close Reading Week 2 Get into groups of 4. I will assign groups the first time. Assign one member of the group to get your reading packets from me. Use your answer sheets to discuss the answers. ->Use your rationale in your discussions. You must have one written. When you establish a group answer, write it in the group answer portion of the answer sheet. You have 20 min. to complete.

Guided Practice – Direct Objects ▪ Direct objects are nouns/pronouns/ or word groups that tells who or what receives the action of a verb or shows the result of the action. ▪ Direct objects answer the question “Whom?” or “What?” after a verb. ▪ Direct objects are generally not found in prepositional phrases. Example: Germs cause illness. Subject: Germs Verb: Cause Germs cause what? Direct Object: ___________

13. Closure – 3, 2, 1 Write 3 sentences and identify the direct objects. Write the 2 questions that direct objects answer. Write 1 place in which direct objects are not found.
