Bullying prevention and awareness in schools have largely centered on creating and enforcing codes of conduct or presenting emotionally charged lessons during Bullying Awareness month. However, it doesn’t seem they are very effective in creating long-term solutions. Why do you think that is? What have your experiences been regarding bullying prevention? Do you believe the lessons you received were effective? Why or why not? Journal Entry

Bullying Research Unit Final Assessment: Based on completed research, you will create and present an anti-bullying guide to students at ERHS Gather information about bullying from a variety of sources, including peer-reviewed journals, articles, and independent research and interviews Work collaboratively to gather information, plan, and write a public document Revise and edit documents to unify the style and meet the standards of an audience for publication

The underpinning focus of the unit is a crash course in research focusing on: ⊙ Research methods and study design ⊙ Structure of a research paper ⊙ Writing a research paper ⊙ Steps to publishing a peer reviewed research article

Intro to Bullying

“ Opinion is really the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability, no understanding. The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another’s world. It requires profound purpose larger than the self kind of understanding.” –Bill Bullard

Brainstorm Let’s brainstorm a list of words associated with bullying. I am going to generate a list on a word document. As a word comes to mind, raise your hand, and I will type it into the document.

Bullying Vocabulary ⊙ You have brainstormed words that relate to the word “bullying.” Now we are going to sort these words on the board. formal ⊙ Which words would a researcher use when writing about the problem of bullying? These are formal words. informal ⊙ Which words do you and your friends use to talk about bullies and bullying? These are informal.

Journal You will not have to share your responses unless you want to. Some of this material may be private or embarrassing. However, you will have the opportunity to share what you wrote, if you wish. CHOOSE ONLY ONE Topic 1 (10 minutes): Have you ever been bullied? What happened? How did you deal with it? What were the consequences? Topic 2 (10 minutes): Have you ever bullied anyone or been an onlooker when bullying was happening? What did you do? Why did you do it? What did the person who was bullied do in response? What happened afterwards?

Bullying Presentation You should have a packet with the following 3 handouts: ⊙ Bullying presentation guidelines ⊙ Bullying presentation rubric ⊙ Annotated bibliography handout

Presentation Guidelines In groups of 4, you are required to complete the following components: 1. Digital Presentation 2. Annotated Bibliography (8 sources) 3. Creative component

Presentation Guidelines While you will review the current research literature related to your topic, it is important to also get scope of the issue at ERHS. Therefore, as a component of the project you are required to conduct a survey of our student body (minimum of 40 surveys) and complete at least 3 interviews. Please be sure your surveys are representative of all classes.

On a separate sheet of paper, answer the questions below in complete sentences. Take note of the formal language. 1. Note the title and headings for the article, what is the main issue the article attempts to address? 2. What is the purpose for the headings in the article? 3. Read the first sentence of each paragraph in the article. Now what do you think the article will be about? 4. How does this text appear to be different from others we’ve read this year? Explain. 5. Identify 3 things you learned, 2 interesting facts, and 1 question you still have about bullying.
