Due: Nothing Today: –Metallic Bonding –Reactivity of Metals (are all metals created equal?) HW Exit Ticket – Write a conclusion about the in class activity. Are all metals equal? Section 8.2 WS

Metallic Bonding Strong forces of attraction are responsible for the high melting point of most metals.

Metallic Bonding  The chemical bonding that results from the attraction between metal cations and the surrounding sea of electrons  Vacant p and d orbitals in metal's outer energy levels overlap, and allow outer electrons to move freely throughout the metal  Valence electrons do not belong to any one atom

Packing in Metals closest packing. Model: Packing uniform, hard spheres to best use available space. This is called closest packing. Each atom has 12 nearest neighbors.

Properties of Metals  Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity  Metals are malleable  Metals are ductile  Metals have high tensile strength  Metals have luster

The Reactivity of Metals Are all metals created equal? Let’s remember the periodic trends Ionization Energy Atomic Radius

The Reactivity of Metals Reactivity – a measure of how readily and violently a substance will react with another substance

The Reactivity of Metals Displacement – when a more reactive metal takes the place of another one in a compound

The Reactivity of Metals Angelina is more reactive than Jennifer…. …so Angelina displaces Jennifer and wins Brad!

The Reactivity of Metals What about a real chemical reaction…? …Magnesium and Copper Sulphate Magnesium + Copper Sulphate Copper + Magnesium Sulphate

MetalSolutionChemical EquationDid a rxn occur? Which metal is more reactive? CuFeCl 3 CuAgNO 3 CuPb(NO 3 ) 2 ZnCu(NO 3 ) 2 ZnPb(NO 3 ) 2 ZnMg(NO 3 ) 2 MgZn(NO 3 ) 2 MgNa(NO 3 ) 2 MgKNO 3

Grrrunt!!! P lease Potassium S top Sodium C alling Calcium M y Magnesium Z ebra Zinc I n Iron C lass, Copper S he Silver G runts! Gold To help us remember…

Exit Ticket Why are all metals not equally reactive? (Hint: think about the periodic trends and location of the metals on the periodic table) Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
