January 26, 2016 Learning Target: I will organize metals according to their reactivity with acid. Quiz on Wednesday (Elements, Compounds, & Reactions) Entry Task: Read “A Brief History of Salt” pg 114-119 Salt has long been used in the preservation of meats. What properties of salt do you think makes it a good preservative? Agenda: Lesson 10.1 – Chem. Reactions w/Metals 1.Complete/Review/Turn in 10.1 2.Quiz Review
2
Order of Reactivity List the metals in order of reactivity starting with the least reactive. For each metal state the evidence (observations) that led to your decision.
3
Order of Reactivity 1.Copper – Very small bubbles – no temp change 2.Zinc – slow constant bubbles – temp change +2° 3.Iron – Constant bubbles – Temp change +3° 4.Magnesium – Fast, hard bubbling, hear hissing sound – temp change +13°
4
Chemical Equations Acid used: HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) IronFe + HCl FeCl3 + H2 Copper Cu + HCl CuCl2 + H2 ZincZn + HCl ZnCl2 + H2 Magnesium Mg + HCl MgCl2 + H2
5
Reaction Definitions Exothermic A chemical reaction where heat is produced. (temp goes up) Endothermic A chemical reaction where heat is used during the reaction. (temp goes down)
