Designing Research 1
2
Introduction An Introduction The paper that provides readers with the background information for the research reported in the paper. Its purpose is to establish a framework for the research, so that readers can understand how it related to other research. A model The research problem Studies that have addressed the problem Deficiencies in the studies The importance of the study for an audience The purpose statement
3
The Purpose Statement Indicates Why you want to do the study and what you intend to accomplish Refers to it within the context of the research question and objective As an aspect of the research problem Closely examining their discussions indicates that they both are referring to eh purpose statement as the central, controlling idea in a study Not the research questions that the data collection will attempt answer The objective and intent and the major idea of a study
4
The Purpose Statement Qualitative purpose statement Use words such as purpose, intent, or objective Focus one single phenomenon(concept or idea) Use action verbs to convey how learning(describe, understand, develop, examine…)
5
Quantitative purpose statement A variable refers to a characteristic or attribute of an individual or an organization that can be measures or observed and that varies among the people or organization being studied. Independent variables: cause or influence affects outcome Treatment, manipulate, antecedent, or predictor variable Dependent variables: the outcomes or results of the influence Intervening or mediating variables: stand between The purpose of this study is… 5 문헌정보학연구방법론 -2

Research Questions & Hypotheses Qualitative study Inquirers state research questions A researcher asks one or two ventral questions followed by no more that five to seven sub-questions. Exploratory verbs Discover, seek to understand, explore a process, describe… Use nondirectional language Affect, influence, impact, determine, cause, relate Use open-ended questions without reference to the literature or theory
7
Example How di early adolescent females read literature that falls outsides the realm of fiction? How do women in a psychology doctoral program describe their decision to return to school?

Research Questions & Hypotheses Quantitative research questions and hypotheses The use of variable in research question or hypotheses is typically limited to three basic approaches. Compare groups Relate one or more Describe responses A test of a theory and the specification of research question or hypotheses that are included in the theory Null and Alternative
9
Example There is no significant difference between the effects of verbal cues, rewards and no reinforcement in terms of social interaction for children with autism and the their siblings. Publicly traded forms will have higher growth rates than privately held firms.
10
Definitions, Limitations, Significance The definition of terms Define terms that individuals outside the field of study may not understand and that go beyond common language. Clearly, whether a terms should be defined is a matter of judgment.
11
Delimitations and Limitations The boundaries of a study Use delimitations to narrow the scope of a study The scope may focus on specific variables or a central phenomenon. Delimited to specific participants or sites, or narrowed to one type of research design Provide limitations to identify potential weakness of the study. At the proposal stage, it is often difficult to identify weakness in the study before it has begun.
12
Definitions, Limitations, Significance Significance of the study Three or four ways in which the study adds to the scholarly research and literature in the field Three or four ways in which the study helps improve practice Three or four reasons why the study will improve policy Example A study….is important fro several reasons. First, understanding relationships among ownership and domain dimensions can help to reveal the underlying logic of organization’s activities and can help organization member evaluate strategies… 12 문헌정보학연구방법론 -1
