Percents, Decimals and Fractions Lesson 3.2 Core Focus on Ratios, Rates and Statistics

1.Write each percent as a fraction in simplest form. a)50% b)80% c)140% 2.Write each percent as a decimal. a)15%b)90%c)0.1% 3.A percent is a ratio that compares a number to ______. Warm-Up 0.15 0.0010.9 100

Percents, Decimals and Fractions Write fractions and decimals as percents. Lesson 3.2

Step 1Write the ratio of the parts shaded for each object to the total space as a fraction in simplest form. a.Bedb.Dresserc.Desk Step 2Convert each fraction in Step 1 to a decimal. Kieran used a piece of 4 by 5 grid paper to sketch the floor plan of his room. He colored the location of his bed with purple and the location of his dresser with blue. The space his desk occupies is colored green. Step 3A decimal can be converted to a percent by multiplying by 100. Multiply each decimal in Step 2 by 100 to determine what percentage of the room is taken up by each object.

Step 4Kieran’s sister, Tamika, gave Kieran an incomplete chart describing her room. Copy and complete the chart for Tamika’s room. Step 5Draw a new 4 by 5 grid for Tamika’s room. Shade in the correct number of squares for each piece of furniture. Will your grid look exactly the same as other classmates’ grids? Explain your reasoning.

Good to Know! There are two ways to write a decimal as a percent. METHOD 1 Rewrite the decimal as a ratio comparing a number to 100. METHOD 2 Multiply the decimal by 100.

a.Write 0.2 as a percent. Method 1: Rewrite as a fraction. Write the decimal as a fraction. Write an equivalent fraction with 100 as the denominator. Write the percent. Method 2: Multiply by 100 Multiply by 100.0.2  100 = 20 Write with the percent symbol. Example 1 %

b.Write 1.63 as a percent. Method 1: Rewrite as a fraction. Write the decimal as a fraction. Write the percent. Method 2: Multiply by 100 Multiply by 100.1.63  100 = 163 Write with the percent symbol. Example 1 Continued… %

a.Write as a percent. Method 1: Rewrite as a fraction. Write an equivalent fraction with 100 as the denominator. Write the percent. Method 2: Multiply by 100 Write the fraction as a decimal. Multiply by 100. 0.4 × 100 = 40 Write with the percent symbol. Example 2 %

b.Write as a percent. Method 1: Rewrite as a fraction. 3 does not divide evenly into 100 so use Method 2. Method 2: Multiply by 100 Write the fraction as a decimal. Multiply by 100. Write with the percent symbol. Example 2 Continued… %
