European Influence in Asia Notebook # 5 Compare the differing ways that European nations developed political and economic influences, including trade and settlement patterns on the continent of Asia

A. Religious Rivalries in Asia not all Asians welcomed Europeans nations there already practiced Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, or Confucianism Arab traders brought Islam to parts of India, Indonesia, & Malaysia Christianity traveled to Asia with European explorers & traders

Japanese and Chinese Isolation Francis Xavier—1 st Jesuit (Roman Catholic society of Jesus) missionary to arrive in Japan he helped convert ~300,000 Japanese to Christianity Japanese rulers saw Christianity as a threat to their power Chinese rulers also disliked Christianity, but wanted Jesuit knowledge of science Jesuits often held govt. jobs

after gaining what they wanted from other cultures (weapons & technical knowledge) Japan & China turned to isolationism—a policy of turning inward from the world the Dutch were allowed in they were interested only in trade, not conquest or religious conversion Japan at Nagasaki China at Macao Europeans wanted silk, artwork, fine china, & tea Asians wanted clocks, eyeglasses, firearms, & scientific instruments

C. Control of the Spice Trade 1500s Europeans set up trading posts on islands of SE Asia Portuguese seized Melaka (on Malay Peninsula) & Moluccas (spice islands) 1600s Dutch took over Portuguese outposts and island of Java

D. Philippines 1565 Spain founded a colony here instead of finding spices, they found fertile soil and an excellent trade location Spanish soldiers set up a fort at Manila missionaries converted most people there to the Catholic faith today, the Philippines is the only Asian nation with a Catholic majority
