Chapter Summary This chapter is about how to measure motion, describing a force, friction, and gravity.

Lesson 1- Measuring Motion

Lesson 1 Vocabulary Motion- an object’s change in position relative to a reference point Speed- the distance traveled by an object divided by the time taken to travel that distance Velocity- the speed of an object in a particular direction Acceleration- the rate at which velocity changes

Lesson Summary An object is in motion if it changes position over time in relation to a reference point. Velocity is the speed in a given direction.

Lesson 2 Vocabulary Force- simply a push or a pull Newton- the SI unit for force Net force- the combination of all of the forces acting on an object

Lesson Summary A force is a push or a pull. Forces have size and direction and are expressed in newtons. Force is always exerted by one object on another object.

Lesson 3- Friction: A Force That Opposes Motion

Lesson 3 Vocabulary Friction- a force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact

Lesson Summary Friction is a force that opposes motion. Two kinds of friction are kinetic and static friction. Friction can be helpful or harmful.

Lesson 4 Vocabulary Gravity- a force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses Weight- a measure of the gravitational force on an object Mass- a measure of the amount of matter in an object

Lesson Summary Gravity is a force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses. Gravitational force decreases as mass increases.
