How Compounds Form

Compound A pure substance made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined Examples of Compounds 1.Water made up of hydrogen and oxygen – H 2 O 2. Hydrogen Peroxide made up of hydrogen and oxygen – H 2 O 2 3. Carbon Dioxide made up of carbon and oxygen – CO 2 4. Carbon Monoxide made up of carbon and oxygen - CO

Chemical Formulas a combination of symbols that represents a compound indicates what elements are present and in what proportion uses subscripts to indicate how many of the element are present

Ionic Compounds an ionic compound results when a metal (positive ion) is attracted to a nonmetal (negative ion) the metal is positive because they have a tendency to lose electrons, while the nonmetal is negative because they have a tendency to gain electrons the result is a compound that is electrically neutral the attraction of the ions is known as an ionic bond

Explain using diagrams how sodium and chlorine react to form an ionic compound.

Explain using diagrams how beryllium and fluorine react to form an ionic compound.

Explain using diagrams how aluminum and fluorine react to form an ionic compound.

Multivalent Elements Certain elements have multiple ionic charges: MetalSymbolIonName of Ion copperCu Cu + Cu 2+ copper (I) copper (II) ironFe Fe 2+ Fe 3+ iron (II) iron (III) leadPb Pb 2+ Pb 4+ iron (II) iron (IV) manganeseMn Mn 2+ Mn 4+ manganese (II) manganese (IV) tinSn Sn 2+ Sn 4+ tin (II) tin (IV)

Write the names for the following compounds: (a) CuCl 2 (b) FeP Write the formulas for the following compounds: (a) lead (IV) oxide (b) iron (III) chloride
