3 Silicon Saxony – The High-Tech Network Around 2.100 companies employing more than 51.000 people with a yearly turnover of 11 billion Euro are active along all steps of the ICT value creation chain: They develop, manufacture, and promote integrated circuits, or serve as materials and equipment suppliers to the chip industry, produce and distribute electronic products and systems based on integrated circuits, or develop and promote software. GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Infineon Technologies have turned their Dresden Fabs into state-of-the-art semiconductor production facilities wordwide. »Silicon Saxony« is Europe‘s biggest microelectronics cluster and is technologically one of the most innovative ICT clusters worldwide.

4 Silicon Saxony – The High-Tech Network SILICON SAXONY THE » PILLARS« TODAY GLOBALFOUNDRIES Fab 1 in Dresden Is currently being expanded into Europe’s largest semiconductor production site and is one of the most productive and most modern wafer factories in the world producing innovative chips with 45 nm, 40 nm, 32 nm, and 28 nm technologies Fab 1 employs around 3.600 highly qualified engineers, technicians and specialists Investment volume of more than 6 billion US-Dollar Sincel the end of 2013 GLOBALFOUNDRIES Dresden is a GIGA- FAB with 80.000 WSPM – currently shifting to FDSOI. Infineon Technologies Dresden GmbH one of Infineon’s largest production sites into which more than 3 billion Euros have been invested since 1994 High quality logic chips are produced on 200 mm wafers with 90 und 250 nm technology in the factory in Saxony Dresden is Infineons competence center for automotive and security applications Dresden site has expanded into the world’s first high volume location for the production of power semiconductors on 300 mm silicon wafers

Within the divisions, members are organising work groups (IC Design, RFID, Java User Group, etc.). The Scientific Board … counsels the board of Silicon Saxony in strategic questions, informs about technological trends and supports regional, national and international research cooperations and technology transfers. The Coordination Office … is responsible for the member management, the organising of events, the communication management and supports the board and divisions in their work for the association The Silicon Saxony Management GmbH... takes over the management of networks and cooperations in the high tech industry. This includes above all the branches microelectronics, photovoltaics as well as information and communication technology.

V. >> Silicon Saxony has been awarded the "GOLD-Label" for excellent Cluster Management from the European Cluster Excellence Initiative (ECEI). In total, there are more than 700 clusters labelled in Europe, 57 of them have a gold label (highest standard).

A LOCATION FOR INTERNATIONAL CLUSTER COOPERATION Since 5 years a cluster cooperation between the semiconductor sites Grenoble and Dresden exists. This cooperations aims to join forces on a european level in order to master the challenges of global competitio n and to strengthen the business location Europe. A joint public policy has been worked out and joint lobbying activities on the european level are constantly taking place. >> This cooperation was also the basis for an european initative: Silicon Europe! >>

The Leading-Edge Cluster comprises more than 100 companies and research facilities, including the Technical Universities of Dresden and Chemnitz, as well as the companies Globalfoundries, Infineon and X-FAB. In the long term, the cluster aims to make communications more climate- friendly and to become one of the world's leading locations for energy efficiency in electronics.
