Suriname Introduction 2 1.The most interesting fact I found about Suriname is on the coast there are leather back sea turtles. 2. One thing that surprised me about Suriname was how in rural areas they have wells for drinking water but bath and wash in rivers. 3. One thing that did not surprise me about Suriname was it has a tropical climate.

Suriname Physical Geography 3 Suriname Covered in 80% unspoiled rain forest The size of Florida Two major mountain ranges Both Both experience rain and humidity Both have areas of rolling hills U.S. Has a large variety of land features including: deserts, canyons, wetlands, prairies, and tundra The fourth largest country in the world Several major mountain ranges

Suriname Economic Geography 4 Suriname Low GDP of $12,300, more citizens living in poverty The government is a major employer Some educated adults must leave the country to find jobs Both Both countries mine bauxite Large purchases are usually made in US dollars Both countries have farming as an industry U.S. High GDP of $49,800, but a wide gap between the rich and poor Service employs the most people Unemployment rates remain high, although improving

Suriname Human Geography 5 Suriname Population is 480,000 Only 87% of adult females can read and write, 5% less than males Both males and females live 7 -11 years less than in the USA Female life expectancy 74 Male 67 Both Home ownership is desired and homes are usually stand alone with their own yard or land The population growth rate is close to 1% U.S. Population is larger than Suriname at 320 million 99% of females can read and write, the same as males Female life expectancy 81 Male 76

Suriname Cultural Geography 6 Suriname Some Surinamers are descendants of Indian indentured servants Favorite meals include pom, bami, and roti Both Both countries have a large number of ethnic groups People in both countries enjoy soccer, basketball, and swimming U.S. Some Americans are descendants of African slaves Favorite foods include pizza, french fries, and hamburgers

Suriname Political Geography 7 Suriname A former colony of the Netherlands The National Assembly is elected by the people and elects the president Both Both countries have a president as the leader Voting age is 18 U.S. A former colony of Great Britain The Electoral College elects the president by representing the popular vote
