Straight or Linear Advantages – Easy transportation Settlement may develop around the transportation Railroad, river, roadway – All main businesses are nearby – May develop near a water source – Basic utilities available Disadvantages – Fire – Tornado – Break-in – Disease – Pollution

Scattered Settlements

Scattered Advantages – No noise – Less pollution – Fires and disease do not spread Disadvantages – Poor transportation – Difficult to get places – Difficult to get emergency relief – Basic utilities not always available

Clustered Settlements

Clustered Advantages – Good transportation – Jobs available – Emergency relief available – Basic utilities available – Entertainment available Disadvantages – Pollution – Loud – Higher crime rates – Overpopulation

Walled Settlement

Walled Advantages – Protection – Close community Disadvantages – Fields and crops outside walls – Fire within city
