1 Our future with the NDIS An NDIS Participant Readiness activity funded by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services

2 NDIS: a new approach BIGGEST social reform since Medicare Individualised disability support Optimises independence, economic and social participation Choice and control Supports people to build skills and capacity Gives certainty to life time support, lifelong relationship

3 What’s in a name? Built on insurance principles Everyone is at risk of disability Everyone is contributing to the Medicare levy Shared risk, shared responsibility Ensures long term sustainability Ensures access to supports over a lifetime Not means tested

4 Queensland: we’re just getting started Starts July 2016, fully implemented by July 2019 Eligible people will be phased in to NDIS over three years Townsville, Mackay, Toowoomba: 2016/2017 Ipswich, Bundaberg, Rockhampton: 2017/2018 Brisbane, Cairns, Gold Coast, Logan: 2018/2019 Around 91,000 Queenslanders to receive NDIS supports Current supports will continue until an NDIS plan is in place

5 Who’s eligible? Impairment or condition that is likely to be permanent and substantially reduces ability to participate effectively in everyday activities Under 65 years of age when first access the NDIS Australian citizen, permanent resident, or citizens who hold a Protected Special Category Visa

6 Starting the NDIS journey Eligibility requirements Age, residency, disability Assessed, receiving supports NDIA gathers information from government departments, service providers, the participant and families NDIA will make contact and advise on the next steps Never assessed, never received supports Contact the NDIA directly Ring 1800 800 110; Walk into local office; Visit www.ndis.gov.auwww.ndis.gov.au

8 Early intervention is for everyone Best-practice approach to support participants achieve good outcomes Provides quality intervention early to reduce the possible need for long term intervention Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI): 0 - 6 years disability or developmental delay, regardless of diagnosis family centred approach access via traditional referral pathways (GP, Paediatrician, hospital) to local early childhood partners

9 Appointment and role of nominees Appointment determined by the NDIA Pre-existing arrangements are respected and taken into account Formal: court appointments Informal: family, friends Types of nominees: Correspondence or Plan Role of a nominee is to: involve the participant in decision-making, where possible support the participant to make decisions, where possible make decisions in the participant’s best interest

10 Carers and the NDIS NDIA acknowledges and respects the role of carers and their unique understanding of the person they care for NDIS will provide supports to sustain informal supports NDIA needs to know about the carer… nature, extent and frequency of the caring role age, capacity and ability to keep caring into the future risks to the long-term wellbeing of the carer supports needed to keep providing care

11 Supports for carers Transition planning Coordination of supports Assistance with decision making, daily planning, budgeting Family support and counselling due to a family member’s disability Training: parental strategies, behaviour support or management plan

12 Centrelink: pensions and allowances Disability Support Pension is not affected by participating in the NDIS A participant will not receive mobility allowance reasonable and necessary transport supports are funded in a NDIS plan Carer payment and allowance affected if a NDIS plan substantially changes care arrangements, to the extent that the carer is no longer eligible under Centrelink criteria
