Lesson Planning

WHO determines what we teach?

Put the following in order from the broadest to the most specific. Lesson plan State standard National Standard Units Curriculum

Educational Standards Statements of what students are expected to know and be able to do at certain points in their education. They are linked to the move towards accountability.

National Standards Developed by teacher organizations in conjunction with state departments of Education. State Standards They come from the National Standards but often put their own spin on them.

What do all of your standardized tests like NJASK & HSPA have to do with standards?

Curriculum is what is being taught in each course. Organizes content in a logical sequence It is a road map that keeps teachers on track Can you imagine if we were all in a different 4 th grade class with different Teachers and they all taught us different Math skills? What would happen when we moved on to 5 th grade?!

If you were asked to write a curriculum, what things would you have to consider first? What is going to affect how you design the course?

How would the following things affect your curriculum? Time? Students? Opportunities for learning? You?

When Writing Curriculum you…. Start with a topic Determine key skills to be taught Consider various teaching methods to use Create a form of assessment to gauge whether or not students learned the material.

WHY are lesson plans so important?

Lesson Plans: Document what is being taught Matches what is going on in the classroom up to standards (hold us accountable) Writing the plan gets teachers to mentally walk through the lesson so they know what needs to be prepared (materials).

There are 3 key elements to Lesson Plans: OBJECTIVES LEARNING ACTIVITIES ASSESSMENT

OBJECTIVES Are the purpose for our lesson. It is what the student will get out of the lesson. What is the objective of THIS lesson? They are measurable They identify an action They describe under what conditions they happen

LEARNING ACTIVITIES The experiences used to help students learn the content and REACH the OBJECTIVES. How do you think teachers decide what kind of activities we should use to teach a lesson?

ASSESSMENT How will you EVALUATE whether learning, that was specified in the objective, has taken place It is a concrete way for us to see if students learned the content
