Objectives to maximize students’ comprehension of text identify relevant and non-relevant information tolerate less than word-by-word comprehension Reading as a skill requires active engagement that helps students develop both the ability and the confidence to handle communication situations they may encounter beyond the classroom.

Reading Techniques To become effective readers students learn how to use reading strategies before, during and after reading Before reading plan for the reading task; set a purpose or decide in advance what to read for; enter the text from the top down or from the bottom up approaches. (the top down approach attends to the overall meaning) (the bottom up approach focuses on the words and phrases)

Reading Techniques During reading monitor comprehension; verify predictions; check for inaccurate guesses; decide what is and is not important to understand; reread to check comprehension

Reading Techniques After reading evaluate comprehension in a particular task or area; identify the main idea of the text; express your evaluation of the text; sound positive.
