Names a person, place, thing or idea Can be concrete, abstract, common or proper Ex: John Smith, Blackwell, chair, fairness People sometimes need inspiration to get through the day. 3

Replace nouns Can be possessive (its), reflexive (myself) or indefinite (someone), etc… Ex: I hope you experience joy. It improves everyone’s outlook. EOL 488-489

Action words, what you can do. Linking verbs are forms of to be (is, was) or sensory words (smell, sound, feel). Helping verbs attach to the base verb (has, have) Modals express an attitude such as a necessity or possibility (must, may)

The rose smells beautiful; it is in the garden.

Describe nouns or pronouns Tells what kind (brown), which one* (those), how many (ten), how much (less) Articles (a, an, the) are always adjectives Can be proper (German folktale) *Be careful, sometimes the same words can be pronouns!

Adds to or changes the verb, adjective or another adverb Tells how (magnificently), when (now), where (there), or to what extent (very). Many end with the suffix -ly, but not always.

Shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence. Works in a phrase, as an object Use Frog/Log analogy (The frog ran around the log.) EOL 503

Connect words or word groups Can be coordinating (and, so), correlative (not only…but also) or subordinating (because, though) EOL 505-506

Expresses emotion (Wow! Ouch!) Has no grammatical relation to the rest of the sentence (oh, well).
