Rules to Know, Day 1 These are the basic rules that the English portion tests.

Foundation Know what makes a sentence!

Avoid Fragments Every sentence needs a subject and a verb to be complete. Which is a complete sentence? –The long, tiring school day. –Running through the field. –She is extremely smart. –Fall, winter and spring.

Basic Sentence Form Subject + Verb + (Object) –Frank caught a large tuna. –She handed me a note. –Maria is the class president.

Tricky Verbs and Subjects Know tricky verbs. (i.e. Forms of “to be”: is, was, are, etc.) Gerunds are subjects. –(ie. Running can be fun.-> This is okay because “running” is the subject and “can be” are the verbs.) Helping Verbs (i.e. can, could, will, would, may, might, etc.) –The nice weather might last all week.

Types of Sentences Simple S + V + (O)O = Object (receives the action) Compound S + V, FANBOYS S + V. S + V; S + V. S + V; transition, S + V. Complex AWUBIS S + V, S + V. S + V AWUBIS S + V. Compound-Complex AWUBIS S + V, S + V, FANBOYS S + V. (many other variations)

If you can master these concepts, you’ll ace half the test! (Helps with comma rules, correct grammatical construction, logical relationships between parts of sentences, etc.
