AEIN Network Academy October 1 & 2, 2009 UAA Consortium Library

2/2007AEIN Data Team Workshop Alaska Educational Innovations Network Build stronger teaching & learning communities Create quality distance-delivered formats for preservice & inservice Develop networked mentoring/induction Expand leadership Support culturally responsive teaching

2/2007AEIN Data Team Workshop A Vision of Success

Outcomes for today & tomorrow Partners leave with identified Inquiry questions Intended results & evidence Theories of Change –supported by/connected to network resources Partners apply motivational framework Partners enhance collegial questioning skills

Processes Fish bowl/modeling Review Probing Connecting

Discernment Congeniality vs. collegiality (connectedness, based on respect for expertise, disposition to support colleagues Niceness vs. Trust Honesty vs. frankness Probing questions/finding wisdom from within

April 2009 Celebration Results 76% increased understanding of motivational framework & 4 conditions 91% became more familiar with work of network members using posters & framework 76% more comfortable with using probing questions after time to practice 91% able to identify factors to help my school develop next steps for our logic model

Questions from the Celebration How to get to trust—how to define it? Should next phase of our work be directed by 4 quadrants? How do 4 quadrant questions change over time? How does one observe “enhanced meaning”? How to do this task with those who have difficulty multi-tasking? How did you get staff buy-in? How to get new staff on board? What next? How do we sustain this…? AEIN collaboration, network, site efforts

Begich question How can we make connections with at-risk students? At risk students: poor attendance (2 days per week, on average, not including school absences) discipline referrals, 2 or more failing grades.

Connecting to the Wireless at UAA Select UAA Public Wireless in your network list Open a web browser Wait 10 seconds Go to www.uaa.alaska.eduwww.uaa.alaska.edu (you may be asked to accept the certificate for wifi.uaa.alaska.edu. Accept it, click ok, to get it to let you connect) A window will come up asking you to accept the terms and conditions Click Ok You are on the Internet now

October 09 Academy Results: Day 1 85% increased skill in applying motivational framework 83% became more confident in framing probing questions to advance work together 89% can identify intended results for logic model

Oct 09 Academy questions: Day 1 QUESTIONS: –Is question too long vs short? Is it good? –What is balance between asking questions/ probing and serving as a resource? –Does our inquiry question need to be proven? INTENDED RESULTS vs EVIDENCE: –How to get data? –What is role of student learning for both? –How do you know if intended result is manageable? IMPLEMENTATION: –Do we want to collaborate with another site? –What is next step? –How do we get buy-in back home? –Will it work? What are risks?

Buy In? What is my role? from Diversity & Motivation: Culturally Responsive Teaching, (Wlodkowski & Ginsberg, 1995) Engendering Competence : Creating understanding and developing effectiveness; building on prior knowledge. Enhancing Meaning: Conversations and work connect individual values to create shared, substantive understandings. Establishing Inclusion: Being sure to hear all voices. The views of members of the learning community are respected and connected to the improvement work. Developing Attitude: Ensuring opportunities for choice and connection to who people are, what they care about, and what they know.

Qualities of Effective Inquiry Questions Clear link to student learning Grounded in quality criteria Manageable Gets at the reasoning behind the question Stands the test of input from multiple stakeholders

Stages of Concern 6. RefocusingI have some ideas about something that would work even better. 5. CollaborationHow can I relate what I am doing to what others are doing? 4. ConsequenceHow is my use affecting learners? 3. ManagementI seem to be spending all my time getting my materials ready. 2. PersonalHow will this affect me? 1. InformationalI would like to know more about it. 0. AwarenessI am not concerned about it.

Theory of Change The chain of events/activities that will lead to the intended result. It is based on your assumptions/understandings of how to make the change you seek. The logic model expands explicates the theory of change by detailing the critical components of the process.

Teachers will implement SIOP Benchmark/Intended Results Activity Common understanding of SIOP Use of common language Engagement Staff see value Common vision Conversation continues with protected time. Use results of peer observation to improve. Staff feel this is manageable. Book Study- (how long?) Skill development: Co-develop lessons Network with others Practice: Peer observation Focus on one content

The Logic Model, revised Benchmark 1 A. Activities & needs: who what when where how? B. What will people learn about/learn to do? (intended results) C. Evaluation/evidence: How will you know they have learned this? D. What is the plan for helping people use what they have learned?. E. What will people do that is different? (intended results). F. Evaluation/evidence: How will you know they are doing it? What do your data say? (what were the results of this step?) What are the implications for next steps?

Manageable Inquiry Do we have the knowledge? –What support do we need? –How can the network help? Do we have the human resources? –Are there enough of us engaged? Do we have the time? –Can we structure our time to address this? –Do we have an adequate duration to realize our goals? –Is this a reasonable focus, considering our other demands? Do we have the money & capital resources? –What are our budgetary needs? Do we have the infrastructure covered? Is the activity/question within our control? –Are we working to change ourselves or others? –How will we engage others, if necessary?

Network Resources What do we have? NING-aeinetwork.ning.com E-live –School leaders forum –Mini-networks –Literacy conference (Nov. 1-3) –RFPs for collaborative work –Expertise/knowledge resources –University faculty and intern visits (rural visits) What do we need?
