BEAK ADAPTATION ACITIVITY PROBLEM: HOW DO ADAPTATIONS AFFECT NATURAL SELECTION? GET YOUR PRELAB PAPER OUT FROM YESTERDAY!

Pre-lab Activity: 1.Obtain a box of “beaks” for your table. 2.Write a description of each beak. 3.List Pro’s and Con’s for each “beak”. 4.Write a prediction to how each “beak will perform. 5.How/Will adaptations be needed?

PROCEDURES: 1.Gather a pan of seeds, four Petri dishes, and four different tools, or “beaks”. 2.Choose one member of the group to be the recorder and the timer. The other members will be the “birds”. 3.Create a data table with space to record 3 trials of each tool and an average of all the trials.

NUMBER OF SEEDS CAPTURED TRIAL # BEAK TOOL 1 BEAK TOOL 2 BEAK TOOL 3 BEAK TOOL 4 1 2 3 AVERAGE

PROCEDURES: (CON’T) 4.Run3 timed trials of 30 seconds each for each tool. Pick up as many seeds as you can during the 30 seconds and place them in a Petri dish. At the end of each trial, count the number of seeds “eaten”. 5.After the third trial, calculate the average for the “beak, and record the average in your data table.

ANALYZE & CONCLUDE: 1 paragraph for each one- 3 paragraphs total. 1.CONCLUDE: Overall which “beak” or “beaks” were the most successful? WHY? 2.INFER: Describe the “beak” of the bird that could have evolved to successfully eat these seeds. Which beak would not be suited to these particular seeds? Draw a rough sketch of each beak type. 3.APPLY: Use the terms beak, seeds, natural selection, adaptation, and success to describe what happened in the lab.
