1 BELLWORK Read about changes in the Soviet Union on pages 564 & 565 and answer the following questions: 1.List four problems the Soviet Union faced post-WWI. 2.Describe Lenin’s economic policies. In what way did he differ from Marxist theory? 3.What changes did Lenin make in 1922? 4.Who was Leon Trotsky? 5.Who was Joseph Stalin? 6.How were Trotsky and Stalin different? 7.Explain how Stalin came to power in the Soviet Union. 8.THINKER: What was the Great Depression?

6 The German Weimar Republic Today, you will read the article “The German Weimar Republic: Why Democracy Failed” and answer the 20 questions on the worksheet. You need to focus on HOW and WHY democracy failed in Germany, as well as, Hitler’s rise to power. These are your notes!!!

7 WWII Government Jigsaw First – on your slip of paper, write down your favorite pizza topping. Do NOT show anyone!!! During WWII, new governments rise to power throughout Europe. To learn about each type of government, you are going to participate in a jigsaw reading activity. The class will be split into groups of 4 & each person will have a different type of government from WWII Democracy, Fascism, Nazism, and Communism As you read your ½ sheet of paper, fill in the corresponding column on your graphic organizer. When everyone is finished, share the information with your group and fill in the rest of the worksheet Be ready to discuss and participate!

8 WWII Government Jigsaw Now that you know about your type of government, we are going to do a simulation on their method of rule. The class will be divided into four groups – each group represents a different government/country from WWII In your group, pick a leader and two speakers As a country you are going to order a one-topping pizza. Your pizza may ONLY have one topping! The catch  You must reach this decision based on how your type of government makes decisions Be ready to tell the class about your discussion process!

9 WWII Government Presentations Pick two representatives from your country to speak to the class. While you present, address the following questions: 1.What are the beliefs of your government? 2.Who was the WWII leader of your type of government? 3.What pizza did you decide to order? 4.How did you come to this decision? 5.Were there any problems/arguments while reaching this decision? 6.Do you think everyone in your group supports this decision? Why or why not?

10 Rise of Dictators After WWI, Europe was politically unstable Some countries felt the Treaty of Versailles was unfair and wanted change! Also, a lot of countries were feeling the economic effects of the Great Depression. This created a desire for more radical governments. Communism Fascism Nazism

15 Rise of Dictators - Discussion This jigsaw reading also acted as a role play! Every group was representing a different type of government in WWII. Communism Fascism Nazism As a class, we will discuss each group and create a chart on the board about the characteristics. Fill in the worksheet as we discuss as a class.

16 Rise of Dictators To understand the characteristics of each government in WWII, you are going to do a Jigsaw Reading. Task: Read a section from the book and take notes to share with the rest of the class. Focus on the characteristics of your government I will pick a leader – they are in charge! They will read the explanation sheet and do exactly as it says. Be able to explain the characteristics of your government! If you have any questions….. Ask me, NOT your group.
