How Parents Can Help… O Literature Rich Environment at Home O Nightly Reading/Weekly Fluency Folders O Support with Editing and Research O Expectation of Quality Work on Every Assignment O Checking Infinite Campus O Reviewing Graded Assignments

Writing O Focus on writing skills, such as planning, revising, editing, researching, and publishing for a variety of genres. O Narratives, opinion/argumentative pieces, and informational/expository texts. O Reading Responses O 6 +1 Traits – Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, Conventions, Presentation O Thinking Maps

Grammar and Word Study Grammar Journey’s Spelling O Mini-Lessons O Within Texts O Within Student Work O Pattern Based Spelling Program O Enhances Phonemic Awareness

Math O Good mathematics teaching does not stop at introducing a rule; good mathematics teaching encourages learners to master the “why” so that they can confidently and accurately apply a rule. (Intel Mathematics Teacher Manual, Page 395) O Concrete Pictorial Algorithm or Equation O Number Sense, Fractions, Equations and Expressions, Geometry, and Measurement & Data O New math adoption – Go Math!

Critical Areas: 4 th Grade O Developing an understanding and fluency with multi- digit multiplication and dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends O Developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers O Understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties (parallel sides, perpendicular sides, angle measurements, symmetry, etc.)

Standards for Mathematical Practices Reasoning and Explaining MP.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MP.3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Habits of Mind of a Productive Mathematical Thinker MP.1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. MP.6 Attend to precision. Modeling and Using Tools MP.4 Model with mathematics. MP.5 Use appropriate tools strategically. Seeing Structure and Generalizing MP.7 Look for and make use of structure. MP.8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

How Parents Can Help… O Word problems, especially problems of the day, may seem very complicated and advanced. O Students will need support thinking about these ideas before they begin to solve: O What they know about the problem O What they know about the answer O Whether this looks like a problem they have seen before

How Parents Can Help… O Often times students will be encouraged to use sense-making strategies to solve mathematical problems. O These strategies will support their growth. O Teachers may delay showing students short cuts or standard algorithms. O Please honor that delay, it is by design to develop a deep understanding of the concept.

Theme Science Social Studies O Scientific Inquiry O Changes in Environment O Plant and Animal Classifications and Adaptations O Energy and Magnetism O Earth’s processes O Weather and Climate O Mapping and geography O Ancient Cultures O Arizona and American History O Economics O Government
