2. What is a phrase? A group of words that form a unit of meaning. A phrase does not contain its own subject and verb. Ex: She had taken the treasure from the field and stowed it away in a hole. or Crashing through a row of mailboxes, it landed in the lake.

3. What is a clause? A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. The following sentence contains two clauses: Some students work in the food pantry because they care about helping hungry people.

4. Independent Clause An independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence. Some students work in the food pantry. Independent clause

5. Dependent Clause A dependent clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence. Most dependent clauses are introduced by words like because, when, if, while, and that. because they care about helping hungry people dependent clause

7. Simple sentences a simple sentence contains one independent clause and no dependent clause. Exs: Kevin tutors. Jacqueline teaches young children acrobatics after school.

8. Compound Sentences a compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses and no dependent clauses. Ex: Kevin tutors, and he helps students learn math. Independent clauses can be joined by a comma followed by For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So (FANBOYS) or a semicolon.

10. Complex Sentences a complex sentence contains only 1 independent clause and 1 or more dependent clauses** **Remember dependent clause trigger words- AAAWWUBBIS + that. Ex: When we visited, Dr. Hacking shared his fondest memories of the Catalina trip he took during the fall.

11. Complex Sentences cont. Whenever you begin a sentence with a dependent clause, you must follow the dependent clause with a comma. Dependent clause, independent clause.

12. Compound-complex sentences contains 2 or more independent clauses and 1 or more dependent clauses. Ex: When our school celebrates Earth Day, (we sign up for environmental projects), and (we try to complete them all in one day). Key: ()= independent clause Underline= dependent clause
