In Jan 1919 they tried to seize power, setting up soviets (workers councils) in many cities. President Ebert called on the Freikorps (groups of nationalist ex-soldiers) to fight the Spartacists. Casualities were high but the Freikorps won. Luxemburg and Liebknecht were killed and the revolt was crushed.

9 Describe the Weimar Constitution of 1919 The Weimar Constitution was the system of Government set up in Germany after the Kaiser stepped down at the end of WW1. It was designed to be the most democratic system in the world, with no-one having too much power. All men and women over 20 could vote. They elected a President and also the Reichstag (Parliament). The President controlled the army and appointed the Chancellor from the biggest group in the Reichstag.

10 Describe the Hyperinflation crisis of 1923 The ToV forced a £6.6bn penalty on Germany for “causing” WW1. In early 1923, after Germany fell behind on its payments, France and Belgian invaded the Ruhr to seize the missing money. The Weimar Government called a strike but kept paying its workers money. With no goods being produced in the Ruhr the German Government ran out of money and responded by printing more. Soon prices and wages began escalating rapidly. People lost confidence in the money.
