1 Timothy 1:18-20 – “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.”

II.The Reasons for Spiritual Shipwrecks – v.19 – They “put away” the faith – “To thrust or push away” – Hymenaeus turned from the faith and embraced false doctrine – Alexander developed a mean spirit and began to work against the things of God – The move from truth to error is a slow process, it starts when we allow sin to go unchallenged in our lives

III.The Results of Spiritual Shipwrecks – v.20 – They had been excommunicated from the protective umbrella of the church – Delivered to Satan’s hand to teach them humility, love of God, and obedience. I Corinthians 5:5 – “To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.”

III.The Results of Spiritual Shipwrecks – v.20 Matthew 18:15-17 – “Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone; if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.”

III.The Results of Spiritual Shipwrecks – v.20 – When a believer becomes shipwrecked there are terrible consequences: We suffer the loss of our testimony We suffer the loss of our influence We suffer the loss of our usefulness We suffer the loss of our reward

III.The Results of Spiritual Shipwrecks – v.20 I Corinthians 9:27 – “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”

IV.The Remedy for Spiritual Shipwrecks – vs.18-19 1.Lies in following- v. 18 The first step in walking with God is following His Word James 1:22 – “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

IV.The Remedy for Spiritual Shipwrecks – vs.18-19 2.Lies in fulfilling Paul is encouraging Timothy to live up to his potential in Christ I Corinthians 15:57,58 – “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

IV.The Remedy for Spiritual Shipwrecks – vs.18-19 3.Lies in fighting The Christian life is a battleground I John 5:4 – “This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”

IV.The Remedy for Spiritual Shipwrecks – vs.18-19 4.Lies in faith “To lay hold of a thing, to own or possess for oneself” Jude 20 – “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.”

IV.The Remedy for Spiritual Shipwrecks – vs.18-19 5.Lies in faithfulness Our conscience needs to be guided by the Word of God II Corinthians 10:5 – “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
