David Walker Quick Facts Born: 1796 in Wilmington, North Carolina Died: August 6, 1830 (Age 33) Occupation: Civil Rights Activist, Writer Legacy: Changed the slavery abolition movement

David Walker’s Early Life Born in Carolina Walker’s father was a slave Walker’s mother was a free women David Inherited his mother’s liberated status Walker’s independence did not keep him from witnessing the degradations of slavery

David Walker Moves to Boston David moved to Boston in 1815 Walker declared that he could not, “remain where I must hear slaves’ chains continually and where I must encounter the insults of their hypocritical enslavers” Settled in Boston by 1825 Serving as a Boston agent for the Freedom’s Journal, David began to share his views in speeches Continued to note the effects of discrimination African Americans not allowed on juries and children attend inferior schools Owner of a secondhand clothing store

Walker’s Appeal Walker's Appeal, in Four Articles; Together with a Preamble, to the Coloured Citizens of the World, but in Particular, and Very Expressly, to Those of the United States of America Title of Walker’s published pamphlet in 1829 Walker references within the Bible & Declaration of Independence to argue against slavery Abolitionists denounced the violence in Walker’s Appeal Walker believed his support of violence was a mean for slaves to regain their humanity

Walker’s Pamphlet distribution Pamphlet: unbound booklet, which consists of a single sheet of paper Walker sewn pamphlets, talking about discrimination, into lining of sailors’ clothes Then relied on sympathetic agents to distribute the papers Salve holders were alarmed by the circulation of pamphlets Outlaw the sharing of antislavery materials Illegal to teach slaves to read and write

Walker’s Death Reward was offered for Walker’s death due to pamphlet popularity growing Friends warned Walker to move, be he refused Walker was found dean in Boston circa August 6, 1830 Many assumed he was poisoned

Walker’s Legacy Walkers actioned changed the tone and aims of the abolitionists movement Most abolitionists supported gradual phasing out of slavery Walker declared immediate elimination Abolitionists wanted free slaves to move to Africa Walker believed every freed slave should be a citizen of the United States Overall Walker fiercely argued views that would inspire others for years to come
