A CRY FOR FORGIVENESS 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
5
THE CONFESSION OF HIS SIN 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
6
AN APPEAL FOR CLEANSING 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
7
CLEANSED BY THE BLOOD Hebrews 9:22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.
8
A PLEA FOR CREATING A PURE HEART 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
9
A PROMISE TO TEACH OTHERS 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
10
THE LIFE OF A SAVED SINNER Luke 22:31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” John 21:17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
11
A PRAYER FOR THOSE AFFECTED 18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; 19 then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

MORALISTIC THERAPEUTIC DEISM Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers – Christian Smith and Melinda Lundquist Denton 2005 A god exists who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth. God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions. The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself. God does not need to be particularly involved in one's life except when God is needed to resolve a problem. Good people go to heaven when they die.

CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW Metaphysics: What is real? – One Sovereign Triune God: transcendent & personal – All of God’s creation Epistemology: How do you know? – God’s written special revelation – Jesus Christ – All of creation – general revelation – Humans are made in God’s image Ethics: How should you live? – God’s character determines what is right and wrong
15
THE CHRISTIAN GOSPEL: JOHN 3:16 There is One Holy Triune Sovereign Creator God All humans are made in God’s image All humans are sinners who rebel against God because of their inherited sin nature and their own committed sins & deserve eternal punishment Jesus Christ, God & man, lived a perfect life and died as a substitute for those chosen by God God saves sinners by His grace alone through a person’s saving faith alone in the work of the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ alone Saved repentant sinners live to honor God now & will go to heaven when they die

APPLICATIONS What do you believe? Have you “observed the Gospel” in yourself? Does your life (not just how much you know) give evidence that God has saved you? How is your life affecting those closest to you?
