WASHINGTON, DC May 24th-27th A guide to a great time
2
Thank you so much for coming as a chaperone. Chaperoning is an important responsibility and needs to be taken seriously. The safety of all is compromised when chaperones do not follow the established procedures. We like our chaperones to behave in a positive manner that our children can use as a model, so please be mindful of the way you speak around our students. Cell phones need to be used at appropriate times. Although your main responsibility is to take care of your own group, please be aware of what all students are doing and correct any inappropriate behavior with any student not acting appropriately. On the bus, help your bus teacher by making sure the students in your area are behaving in a proper manner. Chaperones shall never leave students unattended and NEVER send a child ANYWHERE without adult supervision. This trip is an extension of the classroom; chaperones as well as students must keep this in mind. We hope you have a wonderful trip to Washington, D.C.

Important info. · NEVER allow a student to go anywhere by himself/herself. ·If a student is missing or in case of an emergency, notify a teacher immediately or call the number on the back of the nametag you will be given. (Mrs. Frans – 864-901-2445) (Mrs. Farr- 864-901-2022) ·Some of our students are on prescription medications. Parents will provide us with dosage directions – teachers will administer all medicine to students unless the student is with his/her parent
4
Important info. · Count the students in your group often, especially before leaving each tourist site. · Whenever re-boarding the bus, please check to make sure all individuals in your group are present and seated. (Please do this from your seat without blocking the aisles as the bus teacher will be making a headcount. Often the buses cannot stop for long; therefore our bus count needs to occur quickly and accurately!)Please sit in the same seat throughout the trip. Chaperones need to stay disbursed during the entire trip. · Students are not allowed to ride elevators by themselves.
5
Important info. ·You must have your group ready to go at predetermined times each morning as we are on a strict schedule. Please try to be on the bus 5 minutes before departure time. ·Chaperones need to listen carefully to the Tour Directors/ teachers directions, pick-up and drop of times and locations etc. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND that it is IMPOSSIBLE to move as a whole group in Washington, DC. You need to move in chaperone groups. Stay in chaperone groups!!! (We need to be flexible, on occasion; the itinerary may have to be modified.) Be sure you confirm with the bus director or teacher the pick-up time and location prior to leaving the bus or group.
6
Important info. ·Please do not let your students use the bathroom on the bus unless it is an emergency. (The bus drivers do not have a way of emptying the contents while on the trip.) · Contact a teacher if you have a student that isn’t feeling well. Teachers can administer over the counter meds after receiving permission from a parent. · If you have any problems with a student please contact a teacher right away. ·Remind your students that showing respect at each of the memorials and monuments means walking not running, speaking softly, not sitting or standing on them, and listening when the tour guide is speaking.
7
Important info. · Please remind students to clean up after themselves on the bus and in your hotel room. · Students are responsible for the electronics they bring with them and carrying their own luggage to and from the hotel. ·We will be given vouchers or money envelopes for various food courts or eating venues in Washington. Please try and encourage students to eat at the same place and keep up with their money. These malls/places are crowded and students need to stay with you at all times. · At breakfast, make sure everybody eats something. It is going to be a busy, long day and they need something for energy. Please eat at the same time as your group.
8
Important info. · This is important: When we return each night, please go directly to your groups’ room. Check attendance. Students should be in their rooms. They need to stay on their floor and use the vending machines on their assigned floor (Please escort students to the machines and ask another chaperone to watch your room while gone). We are sharing the hotel with other residents, therefore it is important that students respect that and keep noise to a minimum during this time. Teachers will be around each night to do the official nighttime check in. It is the responsibility of all chaperones to assist all students when at the hotel. Specifically assist in making sure that students are not noisy or running in the hallway. NO STUDENT OTHER THAN THOSE ASSIGNED,MAY BE IN A ROOM, Do not allow visiting in other rooms
9
Important info. ·Remind your group of important things to bring for each day. Most frequently forgotten objects include: money, sunscreen, umbrella, camera, jacket or sweatshirt (for night time touring). Be sure students are packed for the day and report to the bus on time. Once we leave the hotel, we do not return until nighttime.
10
For safety reasons we would like all chaperones and students to wear the same color shirt each day. This makes it easier for us to recognize our children and for the children to recognize chaperones and teachers. Please plan for this in your packing. We will send home the neon t-shirts about 1 week before we depart. Teachers will give students and chaperones nametags on the first day. These also must be worn at all times. Tuesday – white shirts Wednesday – neon orange shirt Thursday – neon green shirt Friday – royal blue 100 year celebration Brushy Creek shirt
11
Buses will depart promptly at 6:00 am on Tuesday, May 24th. Chaperones, will need to see your child’s teacher when you arrive to get a chaperone packet. You will be getting your bus number and rooming assignments the morning of the trip.
