2. What is a Fraternity or Sorority? A fraternity or sorority is a group of men or women bound together by brotherhood or sisterhood and common goals and aspirations. The members that form a fraternity or sorority share their efforts, friendships, and knowledge. Together these members learn, grow, and make the Greek organization stronger. Their common experience builds ties that last a lifetime. Greek organizations enhance your educational experience by emphasizing intellectual, interpersonal, and social development.

3. DEFINITION OF THE GREEK COMMUNITY  The Greek Community at Rowan University is defined as, national or international Social Greek voluntary associations, which meet all the following criteria: 1. The sponsoring bodies are legal corporations. 2. They have organizational goals that are social/service/fraternal rather than honorary, professional, religious or political. The emphasis of these groups is the personal development of members. Membership in more than one such fraternal organization at once is not permitted. 3. They may select members according to subjective criteria consistent with the nondiscriminatory policies of the University. They may be entitled to single sex membership if they meet the provision of Section 86.14 of the regulations promulgated under title IX of the U.S. Education Act Amendment of 1972.  PRO PERTY RECOGNITION  Rowan University DOES NOT recognize the dwellings of members of Greek Organizations as official “Fraternity/Sorority Houses”.

4. Are Fraternities & Sororities like the ones you see on TV & in the movies? While Animal House, Old School, and Legally Blonde are funny movies, they do not accurately depict Greek Life. Greek organizations are diverse and consist of members with many different interests, backgrounds, and majors. Greeks at Rowan University are known for their scholarship, leadership, and community service endeavors.

6. Do Greek organizations take up a lot of time?  Participating in a Greek organization is like any co-curricular activity; it requires a time investment. The time-management skills that are learned from being a part of a Greek organization are invaluable! Being a member of a Greek Organization does take some time out of their day, yet Greek affiliated students graduate with a higher grade point average than their peers.

7. Do Greek organizations take up a lot of time?  Greek members also report greater satisfaction with their college experience. Participating in any worthwhile activity always requires an investment of one’s time.  In addition, students in the Greek community at Rowan University have the opportunity for a well-rounded college experience that includes learning how to balance academics, work, campus involvement and social commitments.

9. Academics Academics should be your student’s number one focus while in college. That’s why most Greek organizations require a minimum GPA in order to remain a member. Usually, each individual chapter has an elected official who is responsible for keeping track of members and their academic performance. Furthermore, many fraternities and sororities have educational programs, such as tutoring and study sessions, which can assist their entire chapter in excelling academically. Since obtaining a degree is the main reason for attending college, your student needs to realize that he or she must keep up their grades if he or she wants to participate in a Greek organization.

10. Leadership fraternities and sororities offer every member many opportunities to develop their individual leadership style and skills. Whether at the top tier of the governing body of the organization, to a committee leader, to an involved member with no official title, each member contributes to the attainment of goals, and the overall success of the organization. Fraternities and sororities are essentially self-governing organizations, and self-sustaining communities, therefore affording each and every member the opportunity to see their leadership in action.

11. Service & University Involvement Service is one of the principles that Greek organizations were founded upon. 15. How do I join? The period of accepting new members into a sorority or fraternity is known as recruitment. During recruitment, all of the Greek organizations hold various events to attract new members. Recruitment is a time when you have the opportunity to visit the different groups to see what each has to offer. First semester freshmen cannot participate in Fall Informal Recruitment. During the Spring Semester, freshmen can participate in recruitment if they meet the requirements.

16. New Membership in Greek Social Organizations  Joining a Greek social organization without fully complying with all university requirements regarding eligibility is strictly prohibited. Both the individual student and the organization will be subject to disciplinary action for new membership violations.  The following requirements pertain to students joining either recognized or unrecognized Greek social organizations.  Full-time matriculated students are eligible for new membership when they have:  Attained a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and have earned at least 12 credits towards graduation.  Completed all Basic Skills classes (if applicable).  Please Note: First semester transfer students will be required to submit an official transcript from their previous institution to verify cumulative G.P.A. eligibility.

17. What is the financial obligation to join a Greek organization? Member dues vary widely from chapter to chapter and are typically higher during your first semester of joining. However Greek membership is affordable and most organizations will work with you to determine how to cover the costs through options such as payment plans.
