3/18 SPECIFIC NODULES-SPECIALIZATIOS OR COURSES (1/6) At the moment, there are no separate modules-specialisations or courses in the field of bio-fuels, bio-materials and quality of products. There is one MSc study line, namely "Quality Assurance in Agro-Food Economy". Beside that, there are several courses which partly including the topics of the quoted area.
4
4/18 SPECIFIC NODULES-SPECIALIZATIOS OR COURSES (2/6) The objectives of the "Quality Assurance in Agro-Food Economy" MSc course are: EU - Agro-Food Legislation; International Quality Management Systems such as ISO 22000, ISO 9001, and ISO 14000; Quality Management Standards for Suppliers of Retailers such as EUREPGAP, BRC, and IFS; HACCP-system; Good Practices such as GAP, GMP, GCP, GHP, and GLP; E-Documentation; Teamwork Supporting Systems.
5
5/18 SPECIFIC NODULES-SPECIALIZATIOS OR COURSES (3/6) The curriculum of the "Quality Assurance in Agro-Food Economy" MSc course consists of: Training is principally based on so called "Techno-Managerial Approach„ which takes into account the technological and managerial aspects of Agro-Food Chain in their interrelation. The First semester is to summarize the technological aspects of Quality Assurance in Agro-food Chain. The Second semester is to provide knowledge on how to manage and develop Agro-Food Quality Assurance and Management Systems in Agro-Food Chain. The Third semester is for a field practice to collect data and practical experiences in development and running of Agro-Food Management Systems and, furthermore to complete and defend diploma theses.

7/18 SPECIFIC NODULES-SPECIALIZATIOS OR COURSES (5/6) There are courses which include partly the bio-fuels, bio- materials and quality of products topics and open for BSc and MSc students. Some of them are free elective subjects, and some of them are included in the module specializations of: - food process engineering, - food quality assurance and, - renewable energy resources.
8
8/18 SPECIFIC NODULES-SPECIALIZATIOS OR COURSES (6/6) Some of those courses are as follows: Reuse of agricultural side products. It includes topics as furnaces used for bio-fuels, biogas production, bio-fuel (bio-diesel, bio-ethanol) production and fuel cells. Food processing technologies and machineries. It includes topics on process design and equipment. Energy economics in agriculture. It includes topics on bio-energy applications. Renewable energy resources. It includes topics on biomass use.
9
9/18 CORRESPONDING ENROLMENT OF STUDENTS Currently more and more students are joining to the bio-fuels, bio-materials and quality of products thematic area. It is as because the students have awareness concerning to the environmental issues and the use of bio-products. Concerning to the MSc study line of "Quality Assurance in Agro-Food Economy" the educational conditions for applications are rather flexible. BSc - level degree in one of the disciplines such as Agricultural, Chemical and Environmental Sciences or General, Agricultural, Chemical and Food Engineering or General, Industrial, Agricultural and Food Economics.
10
10/18 CURRENT EDUCATION AND RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE (1/4) Generally saying, in the biosystems engineering (specifically named agricultural engineering and food processing) study line more institutions take part in just to fulfil the conditions, e.g. providing appropriate educational and research infrastructure. Due to the Bologna process requirements new type of BSc and MSc systems were developed in the field. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Szent István University, Gödöllő takes the lead.

11/18 1.Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Szent István University, Gödöllő, 2.Agricultural Faculty of the Tessedik Sámuel High School in Mezőtúr, 3.Mechanical and Agricultural Faculty of the High School of Nyíregyháza, 4.Food Processing Industrial High School Faculty of the University of Szeged. Additionally, the National Agricultural Engineering Institute located at Gödöllő, provides high level research infrastructure. It is efficiently used by the university researchers and students. CURRENT EDUCATION AND RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE (2/4) The following institutions will take part in the common program:
12
12/18 RESEARCH GROUP ACTIVITIES (1/2) There are several institutions actively working in the field of the bio-fuels, bio-materials and quality of products. Most of the cases students are also involved in the projects. Some of the important institutes and their projects are as follows: Szent István University: - Bio-fuel (biogas, bio-ethanol, bio-diesel) production and studying the calorific values, - Innovative use of sunflower biomass, - Development of quality assurance systems, - Design and development of agricultural machineries, - Sustainable agricultural technologies, - Use of renewable energy resources.
13
13/18 RESEARCH GROUP ACTIVITIES (2/2) Additional important institutes and their projects are as follows: National Agricultural Engineering Institute: - Bio-ethanol production technologies, - Solid biomass productions technologies (for example pellets). Hungarian Academy of Sciences: - Potentials of biomass in Hungary, - Extensions of the energetic use of biomass in Hungary.
14
14/18 CURRENT SITUATION AND PERSPECTIVES IN THE MARKET (1/4) The activities concerning to the areas of bio-fuels, bio-materials and quality of products show real increase. It is currently available a reasonable level of infrastructure in several institutes. Significant research groups are active in the field of bio-fuels, bio-materials and quality of products. The entire field is covered by several national, international and EU supported projects.
15
15/18 CURRENT SITUATION AND PERSPECTIVES IN THE MARKET (2/4) The entire biomass potential of Hungary varies between 200 and 300 PJ/year. That potential can vary under some constrains depending on the synthesis of different biomass categories and condition of production. As a matter of fact, it is influencing a promising market increase in the field. Nowadays, many companies recognized the possibilities.
16
16/18 CURRENT SITUATION AND PERSPECTIVES IN THE MARKET (3/4) As a good example, in the year of 2005 the share of the renewables in motor fuel was 0,5%, the prediction for 2008 is 2% and according to the estimation for 2010 it will reach 4%. It implies an extensive bio-ethanol production. One company, namely BKZ Ltd, which is 75% owned by Swedish SEKAB Svensk Etanolkemi AB, plans to open four plants to produce bio-ethanol. The total investment cost is over 343 million EUR.
17
17/18 CURRENT SITUATION AND PERSPECTIVES IN THE MARKET (4/4) Aditionally, quite a number (20-30) of SMEs are also planning to open facilities, and some are already in production of bio-fuels and different bio-materials. Unfortunately, so far there is not available a very precise, up to date statistics in the field. The main reason should be the fast changing in the field.
