2 Abstract Creating interactive video maps using Flash ActionScript and the design and education theories behind the effectiveness of this technology will be discussed. It will be shown that this technology incorporates John Dewey’s active learning theories and Edward Tufte’s design principles. The presentation will feature how interactive multimedia created with Flash ActionScript is being used to represent complex data with clarity and serves as a learning tool. Environmental and election maps will be used as examples.

3 Flatland "We envision information in order to reason about, communicate, document, and preserve that knowledge -- activities nearly always carried out on two-dimensional paper and computer screen. Escaping this flatland and enriching the density of data displays are the essential tasks of information design." - Edward R. Tufte, Envisioning Information http://www.goines.net/Writing/clarify_add_detail.html#RETURN8
