Where do we start? Let’s get to know each other a little.... www.socrative.com Room number: UEHN9AM8W –Who’s here? –Who gets to claim you? –What are we thinking about CTE at the moment? June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 113

What CTE is not... June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 114

Common misconceptions about CTE... CTE is less challenging than core academic courses. CTE doesn’t look good on a resume. CTE is only for those who can’t cut it in traditional academics. CTE licensure/certification isn’t “as good as” a degree from a 4-year college. A CTE “graduate” will make less money than a graduate of a 4-year college. You can’t get financial aid for CTE programs. You can’t get a degree from a CTE school. 6 CTE by the numbers... June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 116 An interesting infographic: http://mytrainingnow.com/_email/images/CareerTech-by-the- Numbers_lg.png

CTE is.... June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 117 Source: https://www.acteonline.org/cte/

CTE is...... cutting edge, rigorous, and relevant education that prepares students for a wide range of high-wage, high-skill, high demand jobs. CTE encompasses 94% of all high school students and 8.4 million individuals seeking post-secondary certification and/or degrees in CTE fields CTE includes high schools, community and technical colleges, 4-year universities, and more CTE educates students through 16 career clusters and 79+ pathways CTE integrates with academics in a rigorous and relevant curriculum CTE helps to prepare students to be college- and career-ready CTE helps keep students in school: 93% graduation rate compared to 80% nationwide June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 118

CTE is important because... CTE prepares a qualified work force CTE prepares students for highly-paid, fast-growing, in-demand jobs CTE prepares students to fill talent shortages CTE prepares students for industries that are critical to state, regional, and local economies CTE prepares students for the growing class of middle-skills jobs Source: https://www.acteonline.org/general.aspx?id=5748#FastGrowingHighPaid June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 119

CTE... The purpose behind the importance... Our purpose: To provide individuals with coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in current or emerging professions. 11 TEXAS Initiatives June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1111

State Plan for CTE Based on the understanding that: –A rigorous academic foundation contributes to success in school and in life –All students are entitled to equal educational opportunities CTE programs complement and enhance academic preparation by allowing students to apply academic principles and technical skills essential to career success CTE allows students to see the relevance of their academic preparation to their future career goals. June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1112

State Plan for CTE, continued... Based on a relevant coherent sequence of CTE courses with college credit opportunities: dual credit, statewide and locally articulated credit, Advanced Placement (AP) and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) credit Opportunities to earn industry-recognized certifications and licensures Extended learning—curricular and extracurricular activities, work- based and service learning, and professional associations June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1113

CTE Programs of Study June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1114 www.AchieveTexas.org

Hmmm... What are we thinking? Time for a question? Socrative? –What are we trying to do here? –How can this be done? June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1115

Begin with the end in mind.... Goal for a CTE student: to earn an industry-recognized license or certification either before or shortly after graduation from high school June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1116

Let’s work backwards.... HIGH SCHOOL –A CTE student will follow a 4-year plan that includes a coherent sequence of CTE courses – 4-year plan– The student’s roadmap. (Think “degree plan.”) –Includes all academic requirements for graduation –Maps out the student’s coherent sequence of CTE courses June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1117

The coherent sequence... What it is: a coherent sequence of CTE courses is: –2 or more CTE courses in a sequence, for –3 or more credits Why it’s important: –CTE PEIMS Coding is based on whether or not a student is in a CTE coherent sequence –CTE PEIMS codes are included in the STAAR Pre-code File –The data source for CTE on PBMAS is the group of students who are participants in a CTE coherent sequence June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1118

Examples of coherent sequences... June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1119

Examples of coherent sequences... June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1120

CTE & PEIMS... What it is: Public Education Information Management System What it does: –It counts CTE kids –0 –Not in a CTE class on Fall Snapshot Date –1—In a CTE class on Fall Snapshot Date –2—In a CTE coherent sequence of courses –It’s the basis for CTE funding Why it’s important: –CTE courses draw weighted funding –CTE students are coded on the Pre-Code file for testing –CTE Coding directly impacts PBMAS June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1121

CTE & PBMAS... What it is: Performance-Based Monitoring Analysis System What it measures: the 4 Federal Programs: –Bilingual/ELS –CTE –No Child Left Behind –Special Education Why it’s important: –For CTE, it’s our “report card” –CTE performance on PBMAS determines staging for Performance Monitoring Interventions June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1122

Beginning with the end in mind... To review: High School: –Industry-recognized certification or licensure –4-year plan –Coherent sequence of CTE courses –CTE PEIMS Coding June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1123

Let’s work backwards some more.... MIDDLE SCHOOL –Career Development and Career Planning –CTE courses: Career Exploration and Career Portals –Career Interest Surveys –Development of a student-driven 4-year Plan by 8 th grade –A living document –Must be revisited annually –Must be signed and dated by the student and the counselor – VITAL for accurate PEIMS coding –NOTE: CTE courses only draw weighted funding for grades 9-12 –NOTE: Some high school CTE courses may be taught at middle school for high school credit June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1124

Let’s work backwards some more.... ELEMENTARY SCHOOL –Career Awareness and Exploration –Recognition and development of essential work-related skills –Career Day!!! June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1125

A very important consideration... Teacher Certifications.... These may be found on the Teacher Assignment Chart June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1126

Questions & Answers? June, 2016Presented by Education Service Center Region 1127
