mirrors

What is a plane mirror? ● Its a plain mirror! (But called a plane mirror...) ● Its a FLAT and SMOOTH mirror, like many in your home. ● The reflection should be the ● same as the object! ●

Plane Mirrors ● In a plane mirror, we are the same height, and we appear to be the same distance away on the other side of the mirror. The image should be a more accurate reflection than this!

Left or Right? ● In a plane mirror, your right arm looks like your left, and your left arm looks like your right.

SO..... ● Images in a plane mirror are: – Oriented properly – Reversed – Same size – Same distance

How do we see images in a plane mirror? ● 1. Light hits an object. ● 2. Light reflects off the object in all directions, hitting the mirror as well. ● 3. Light rays then reflect off of the mirror, and this is what our eyes see ● 4. But the object seems to be coming from behind the mirror..... ● WHY???????

Our brain thinks light always travels in a straight line! ● Since the light rays seem ● to be coming straight from ● behind the mirror, the object ● also seems to be coming ● from behind the mirror.

CONCAVE Mirrors ● Curve inward (like in a cave!) ● Reflect light, but differently ● Light rays reflect ● and then converge ● together at a ● focal point. ● This is called ● CONVERGING

Only Draw 2 Lines to Find Image! ● Draw a line from the object to the mirror, and then through the focal point ● Draw a second line from the object through the focal point to the mirror, and then reflect off straight outwards

CONCAVE ● The image will depend on how close the object is to the focal point ● Object far ● away from ● focal point, ● image is ● small and ● upside down

CONCAVE ● If the object is close to the focal point, the object will be upside down but larger.

CONCAVE ● If the object is inside of the focal point, the object will be virtual, on the other side of the mirror. It will also be large and upright!

Why use concave mirrors? ● If bright light is placed at the focal point, all of the light rays will reflect off of the mirror in parallel rays. This will produce super INTENSE light! ● This can be used for: – Lighthouses – Spotlights – Car Headlights – Telescopes

CONVEX MIRRORS ● Convex mirrors bend outwards ● Parallel light rays hit ● a convex mirror and ● then reflect in a ● direction as if they ● came from behind ● the mirror.

They are DIVERGING! ● The light rays are diverging, rather than converging.

Images ● Images in convex mirrors will always be: – Smaller – Upright

2 Cool Things ● Objects will ALWAYS be smaller than they appear ● You will always see WAY MORE images than any other kind of mirror

Uses? ● Security Camera ● Review Mirror ● Staircases ● Corners ● Decorative

Ray Diagram for CONVEX ● Convex is more difficult to draw, because all of the lines are DIVERGING. The only come together at a point behind the mirror ● http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYuOCswkm3g

Draw 2 Lines ● Draw the first line parallel to the mirror, and the pretend you are drawing down to the focal point ● Draw the second line as if you were going to the focal point, but then bounce back off the mirror in a parallel line ● Extend ALL lines until they cross!
