1
Metals and Nonmetals
2
What are the properties of metals? Good conductors (easily transfer heat and electrical current) Shiny luster Malleable (can be hammered flat without breaking) Ductile (can be drawn into wires)
3
Conductivity What are some examples of good conductors? Why don’t you want to put your tongue on metal outside in the winter?
4
Luster: how something reflects light Metals aren’t always shiny, but often are. Look around the room and pick out 5 things that are metal
5
Malleability
6
Ductile- can be drawn out into long wires
7
Magnetism Some metals are magnetic –iron, cobalt, nickel
8
Solids at room temp. All metals are solid at room temp. with the exception of Mercury (Hg).
9
Metals are reactive
10
Where are metals located on the periodic table?
11
What’s wrong with Steve’s armor and sword?
12
Nonmetals Exactly the opposite of metals! NOT - shiny NOT - ductile NOT – conductive NOT – malleable NOT – magnetic Can be found as solids liquids or gasses Often dull and brittle
14
Metalloids Share properties of both metals and nonmetals Examples include silicon, carbon, and sulfur
