2 Group Brainstorm What types of things do you think bullies do? Why do you think some kids engage in bullying behavior? What happens to students who bully others? What happens to students who are being bullied?

4 BULLYING happens… whenever someone uses his or her power to unfairly and to repeatedly hurt someone. Physical Power Emotional Power Social Power

5 Kids who bully others… 1.__ usually feel guilty about their behavior. 2.__ don’t really feel compassion for others. 3.__ are boys only. Girls don’t bully. 4.__ are loners. 5.__ may feel secure and have a high self-image. 6.__ don’t really mean to hurt others. 7.__ feel that the students they pick on deserve to be bullied. 8.__ usually do okay in their schoolwork. 9.__ will back off if the students they bully fight back. 10.__ think they should always win.

6 Kids who are bullied… 1.__ usually get what they deserve. 2.__ feel secure and have a high self-image. 3.__ are loners. 4.__ sometimes provoke the students who bully. 5.__ should fight back. 6.__ sometimes cry easily. 7.__ spend a lot of time and energy being afraid. 8.__ always tell adults when they are bullied. 9.__ never carry weapons for protection. 10.__ always lose.

(No one deserves this!) 2.F feel secure and have a high self-image. 3.T are loners. 4.T sometimes provoke the students who bully. 5.F should fight back. 6.T sometimes cry easily. 7.T spend a lot of time and energy being afraid. 8.F always tell adults when they are bullied. 9.F never carry weapons for protection. (No weapons should EVER be brought to school.) 10.T always lose. (The person who is bullied always feels some physical, emotional or social pain/loss.)

9 Things to Know… Students who bully commonly: feel excited by their bullying behavior and by the reaction of the students they’ve targeted. thrive on feelings of dominance and power. possess low levels of empathy and compassion. enjoy causing pain. appear calm and are able to talk themselves out of certain situations. This helps them hide their behavior from adults. interpret vague acts as hostile and blame the targeted students. receive average grades. have an inflated sense of self-worth. have unrealistic beliefs, such as “I should always have my own way” or “Anyone who disagrees with me is out to get me” have a small, tight network of friends.
