19 Unit 2 – Strategic Management Assignment Checklist  Explain the concept of the strategic management process.  Discuss the importance of having a future oriented plan.  Discuss the organization’s vision, mission, purpose, philosophy, or goals.  Discuss the strategic process as input for future decision making.

20 Unit 2 Assignment  Explain the concept of the strategic management process. Defined: The set of decisions and actions that result in the formulation and implementation of plans designed to achieve a company’s objectives (Pearce & Robinson, 2011, p 3). Essentially a game plan Nine critical tasks: 1.Formulate the company’s mission 2.Analyze the company’s internal conditions and capabilities 3.Assess the external environment – competitors? 4.What are the options? How can we match internal strengths with external factors? 5.How do these options align with the mission? 6.Formulate long-term objectives and grand strategies 7.Develop short-term goals working towards long-term strategy 8.Implement using available resources and budgets 9.Evaluate the success and reformulate long-term objectives

21 Unit 2 Assignment (cont)  Discuss the importance of having a future oriented plan. Strategic decisions are based on what managers forecast, rather than on what they know. In such decisions, emphasis is placed on the development of projections that will enable the firm to select the most promising strategic options. In the turbulent and competitive free enterprise environment, a firm will succeed only if it takes a proactive (anticipatory) stance toward change (p 5). What are your competitors doing? Are there are any economical or environmental implications? Will regulatory changes impact your strategy?
