Human The typical person will develop an impression on an individuals resume within the first 30 seconds *regardless how much they have read* 2.Computer Your resume is run through a computer software developed to match key words in your resume to key words in the job description, industry, company, etc. Your resume is analyzed in 1 second TODAY, I WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO PASS BOTH TESTS

4 W HEN HUMAN IS READING YOUR RESUME All humans read at different speeds?  Novel=250 words a minute Document=50-100 Resume=depends We potentially only have 75 -100 words to describe ourselves CHOOSE WISELY Important: how many words can someone think? Thoughts are endless This is what we want to tap into- giving that person the thought or impression of ourselves through our resumes

5 W HO WILL READ YOUR RESUME / HOW THEY WILL READ OUR RESUME  Company recruiter  Screens quickly for qualifications  Quick 5 point skim (if majority, high chance to move on)  1.Location 2.Industry 3. Function 4.Level 5. Experience  Other things: education,*grammar and format*  Hiring Manager  Already expect minimum requirements to be had  Judges skill gaps and competencies  Looks for 4 things: 1.Does the candidate know the business? 2.Is the candidate good with people? 3.Is the candidate hard working? 4.Is the candidate honest?

6 O THER COMPANY MEMBERS WHO MAY VIEW YOUR RESUME  Employee members  Want to see you simply know what you are doing  Want to know you can work independently  Tip- validate your skills with details  Ex: Excel-Pivot tables, Hlookup, vlookup, index match  Department Heads  Really want to see communication skills  Want to see curricular activities, assess fit in company  Human Resources  Fit with Companies mission, vision, and values  Tip- visit website of company and identify key words within organization

Match your resume to the Job Tip- focus on the first 3 lines of job description and job requirements Tip- Analyze company’s website keep up to date with company you submit application to 2.Utilize key words Tip- elaborate abilities if Excel is required, What statement is better? Expert in Excel Or Proficient in Excel-Hlookup, Vlookup, index-match functions Tip- Use industry terms that match company/job Example: lean manufacturing, cost accounting, tax accounting, six sigma Tip- use keywords from company’s mission, vission and values statements

Proficient Excel skills in pivot tables and intermediate excel functions Or this? (6 seconds) Penn state BS Accounting degree, minor: Economics, 2016 Auditing experience at mid-size law firm Proficient in Excel-Hlookup, Vlookup, Pivot Table, Index- match functions

Reflection and peer review No resume is perfect, constantly revise Does your resume answer these questions: Do you know the business? ( Tip -use #’s and $’s) Are you hard working? Good with people?( Tip- identify what things you did on resume that worked in a group) Honest/Trustworthy?( Tip- identify responsibilities when you were trusted with something) Peer Review Give your resume to a friend to read over for 30 seconds Then give him a pen and paper and make him write down everything he can remember about your resume

12 H OW TO MAKE YOUR RESUME STAND OUT 1. match and tailor each resume to the job you are applying to Tip- focus on the first 3 lines of job description and job requirements Tip- Analyze company’s website to keep up to date with company you submit application to 2.Utilize key words Tip- elaborate abilities Tip- Use industry terms that match company/job Tip- use keywords from company’s mission, vision and values statements 3.Maximize word use and efficiency 4.Reflection and peer review Tip- identify what things you did on resume that worked in a group Tip -use #’s and $’s Tip- identify responsibilities when you were trusted with something

13 AVOID THESE WHEN SUBMITTING RESUMES ONLINE Italics or script Underlining Reverse printing (white letters on a black field) Shadows shading Shadows or shading o Hollow bullets (they read like the letter o ) # Number signs (#) for bullets (the computer may read it as a phone number) Boxes (computers try to read them like letters) Two-column formats or designs that look like newspapers Symbols, such as a logo Vertical lines (computers read them like the letter l ) Reverse printing (White letters on a blank field)
