What is happening to the yeast in your flask?

They are growing! Yeast are single celled fungus that grow by budding (splitting) Each new yeast cell buds and the population grows quickly How do you grow? Your cells divide---mitosis and meiosis

How do they grow? Cellular Respiration! Cellular respiration is the process where sugar (food) is turned into energy. Energy is needed for your body to survive Do you do cellular respiration? YES!

Tell me more about cellular respiration... Chemical formula: C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 ---> 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + ATP Sugar (glucose) + oxygen ----> carbon dioxide + water + energy 3 Major Steps in the process  Glycolysis  Krebs cycle  Electron Transport Chain

What if oxygen isn’t present? Glycolysis is followed by fermentation Alcoholic fermentation or Lactic fermentation occurs  Not much energy (ATP) is produced in this process  Yeast do alcoholic fermentation  Your body does lactic fermentation

Cellular Respiration Key Points Food is converted into usable energy (ATP) through multiple chemical reactions Oxygen is needed to get the most energy Water and Carbon Dioxide are byproducts
