Identifying and Modeling Fractions Pamela D. Coleman

What is a fraction? A fraction represents a part of a whole or part of a set. Example: The pizza slice is one part of the whole pizza. 2

Fractions There are two numbers in a fraction. 1 2 The top number is called the numerator. The bottom number is called the denominator. TIP: The Denominator is Downstairs 3

Fractions The numerator tells how many parts of the whole or set you have. The denominator tells how many parts the whole or set is divided into. 4 1 2

Example The circle is divided into 4 equal parts, or fourths. Each part is one-fourth of the whole circle - one part out of four parts in all. Two parts out of four parts would be… Two-fourths or one half 5 1 4 1 2

Example Each part is one half of the whole window - one part out of two parts in all. Two parts out of two parts would be… One whole or 2/2 or 1 The window is divided into 2 equal parts, or halves. 6 1/2

7 Top number is the numerator Bottom number is the denominator Part of a whole Numerator – tells how many parts of the whole you have Denominator – how many parts the whole is divided into
