Why did the Israelites wander in the desert for forty years? The Israelites did not trust in the Lord to bring them into the promised land. All those who had witnessed God’s great works and still doubted were punished for their sin.

Turn in your textbook to page 38. Read Joshua and the Judges of Israel. Read Joshua 2 and Joshua 6. What kind of leader was Joshua? How did he bring the Israelites into the Promised Land?

Prophets, priests and kings were anointed with holy oil. Oil is a symbol of beauty, strength, nourishment, and consecration (being set apart for God). We see anointing in the Catholic Church at Baptism, Confirmation, Ordinations, and the Anointing of the Sick.

Holy Oils These oils are usually blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday.

Oil of Catechumens: Olive or vegetable oil; used at Baptism and poured with Chrism into the baptismal waters when they are blessed at the Easter Vigil.

Sacred Chrism Olive or vegetable oil mixed with balm; used for Baptism, Confirmation, Ordinations of priests and bishops, and for the dedication of churches and altars.

Oil of the Sick Olive or vegetable oil; used for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

Psalm It comes from the word meaning song. Psalms were beautiful songs accompanied on the harp. David composed many psalms to praise God, to thank him, to ask for help, and to soothe troubled spirits. We still say/sing the Psalms at the Mass and in the Liturgy of the Hours.

Solomon What was King Solomon known for? Read 1 Kings 3 to find out what he is known for. King Solomon is known for being wise. Where did he get his wisdom? He asked it of God and God gave it to him.
