The rotation in 3-man mechanics is where the 1 st base umpire in A-Position and 3 rd base umpire is in the middle at the time of the pitch.

When the 1 st base umpire does not go out on the fly ball. The ball must leave the infield. In flight or ground ball (No rotations on overthrows)

When one of the 5 situations (covered later) dictate the plate umpire will go directly to the cut-out at 3 rd base The 1 st base umpire will commit to home as the runner that began at 1 st base commits to 3 rd. The 3 rd base umpire in the middle splits the difference between 1 st and 2 nd taking any plays on the batter runner or plays into 2 nd base.

With the 1 st base umpire at 1 st, and the 3 rd base umpire in the middle.

No runners on and the ball is hit to the outfield on a multiple base hit. The 3 rd base umpire picks the batter runner up at 2 nd base. The plate umpire comes to the cutout at 3 rd base The 1 st base umpire stays in foul territory, see the touch of 1 st. As the batter-runner commits to 3 rd base he goes home for plays at 3 rd base extended.

Plate umpire comes down in foul territory, sees the touch of home plate. 3 rd base umpire goes directly to 2 nd base. 1 st base umpire stays in foul territory, sees touch of 1 st base as batter-runner commits to 3 rd base he then goes to 3 rd base extended for plays at the plate.

Runner on 1 st and 2 nd less than 2 Outs, fly ball caught in the outfield. Plate umpire moves 1\2 way to 3 rd in foul territory. When caught he goes to the cut- out at 3 rd base. 3 rd base umpire lines up tag at 2nd. Splits the difference between 1 st and 2 nd. 1 st base umpire lines up the tag at 1 st. As the runner from 2 nd commits to 3 rd base he goes home to 3 rd base extended for plays at the plate.

Runners at 1 st and 2 nd ball hit to the outfield not caught. Plate umpire drops straight back observes touch of 3 rd base. Has all plays at home. 3 rd base umpire slides to split the difference for all plays on the runners from 2 nd or 1 st at 2 nd or 3 rd base. 1 st base umpire comes to infield and takes all plays on the batter runner into 2 nd base.

Bases Loaded base hit to the outfield. Plate Umpire drops straight back and observes runner from 3 rd touch home and runner from 2 nd touch 3 rd. Plate umpire has all plays at the plate. 3 rd base umpire will split the difference for plays on runners from 1 st and 2 nd at 2 nd or 3 rd. 1 st base umpire will come to the infield and take all plays on the batter runner into 2 nd base.

With no runners on the crew can decide who dictates when the Centerfielder goes in or back. When you go out you stay out. If the 1 st base umpire goes out the plate umpire takes the touch and all plays at 1 st base. 3 rd base umpire will go directly to 2 nd base and take the runner to 3 rd base.

No runners on and 3 rd base umpire goes out. Do not come back once you go out. 1 st base umpire takes the batter runner to 3 rd base Plate umpire comes to the infield and as the runner gets to 2 nd base go to 3 rd base extended for plays at the plate.

Runner at 1 st takes primary lead. In foul territory with right foot touching the foul line, line up your view of the pitcher just off the left shoulder of the runner. Square up to home plate. On a double play move toward right-center field so play does not blow-up on you.

3 rd base umpire can be in “B” or “C”. Be in position for the check swing. Be comfortable to see the tag on the steal play.

Anytime there is a runner on 1 st base. If there is a possible steal of 3 rd you should be in short “C” same as 2-man. Other times it is preferred to be back toward the dirt. Has from the CF to LF catch\no catch responsibilities. Never go out on fly balls from the middle. (College) Has tag at 2 nd base.

Runner at 1 st base. Has catch\no catch on balls hit from CF to RF line. Go out if there is possible trouble. Go out if there is doubt. Stay out. Has tag at 1 st base.

No runner on 1 st base. Take steal plays from foul territory. Work towards coaches box. Observe all touches in foul territory. On base hits take the plays close to the coaches box. All catch\no catch plays from CF to 3 rd base line. Go out on possible trouble balls, if in doubt go out.

Plate umpire has the tag responsibility 3 rd base umpire needs to get to 2 nd base for potential play. 1 st base umpire stays in foul territory, has touch of 1 st base Rotation #4 If 1 st base umpire goes out, 3 rd base umpire has touch of 1 st and plays back into 1 st base. If 3 rd base umpire goes out the 1 st base umpire has potential plays back into 3 rd base. Try not to go out if possible with runner on 3 rd base, it is tough.
