2  Rock as most people know it started off as Rock’n’Roll in the1950’s  Before that, influences came from music including jazz, blues, rhythm & blues (R&B), country and western.  In an attempt to rejuvenate the music industry in a much more modern and upbeat way, white country artists took inspiration from black rhythm and blues artists.  Many black artists then made use of white artist’s hardware, which in turn lead to music such as Motown and Soul.  Thought to have originated from Central and Southern USA  The overall genre of Rock, in effect, is from African origin.

3 Timeline ‘Rocket 88’, widely recognised as the first ever rock single, was released 1951 1954 Elvis Presley records his first commercial record ‘Beatlemania’ begins, as the Beatles top the US chart 1964 1970 1 st Glastonbury festival British Punk music was started 1976 1981 MTV is released in the US ‘Thriller’ stayed no. 1 in the charts for 37 weeks 1983 Freddie Mercury Died, and Grunge band Nirvana made their debut album 1991 1985 Live Aid performances around the world Universal and Polygram merge, making it the biggest record company 1999 1994 Kurt Cobain, lead signer of Nirvana, is found dead next to a shotgun 2001 Emo culture went mainstream (sadly)

8  Rock music differs in popularity among different regions of countries.  Generalised, rock is one of the top 3 favourite genres, alongside Hip-Hop and Rap  Originally, rock was the dominant genre for many years, but as different, urban-based groups started to increase in popularity from the introduction of the internet, people now listen to a variety of music genres, and not just rock  Rock has become merged with other genres to create popular music which satisfies the multi-genre audiences

11  The future of rock music lies with its audience and sub- divisions of its own sub-genres  Conventional rock music listeners appear to be getting older, so eventually traditional music such as folk may die out  Rock music will have sub-genres which nowadays will be put into other genres such as hip-hop, as the meaning definition of rock music becomes more vague  Rock music will ultimately dissipate into other genres, and will trigger the starting point of a new genre of music altogether, much like how the blues and jazz music started off rock music
