5 What is Cyber Bullying?  The use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature.  It has grown exponentially in the last decade; over 40%  It can affect your child emotionally, mentally and even physically if the issue escalates without attention  Types of Cyber Bullying  Gossip: Posting or sending cruel gossip to damage a person’s reputation and relationships with friends and family  Exclusion: Deliberately excluding someone from an online group.  Impersonation: Breaking into someone’s e-mail or other online account and sending messages that will cause embarrassment or damage to the person’s reputation and affect his or her relationship with others.  Harassment: Repeatedly posting or sending offensive, rude, and insulting messages.  Cyberstalking: Posting or sending unwanted or intimidating messages, which may include threats.

13 How to Get Help  Steps to Take Immediately  Don’t respond to and don’t forward cyber bullying messages.  Keep evidence of cyber bullying. Record the dates, times, and descriptions of instances when cyber bullying has occurred. Save and print screenshots, emails, and text messages. Use this evidence to report cyber bullying to web and cell phone service providers.  Block the person who is cyberbullying.  Report Cyberbullying to Online Service Providers  Review their terms and conditions or rights and responsibilities sections. These describe content that is or is not appropriate  Visit Social Media Safety Centers to learn how to block users  Report Cyber bullying to the social media site so they can take action against users abusing terms and service  Report Cyberbullying to Law Enforcement  What to report:  Threats of Violence  Child Pornography or sending sexually explicit messages or photos  Stalking and hate crimes

14 How to Get Help  Report Cyberbullying to Schools  Cyber Bullying can create a disruptive environment at school and is often related to in-person bullying. The school can use information to help inform prevention and response strategies  In many states, schools are required to address cyber bullying in their anti- bullying policy. Some state laws also cover off-campus behavior that creates a hostile school environment  Talk to your son or daughter openly about ways to properly use the internet, as well as
