What’s a Pathway Without a Map? A Look at Program Mapping for Guided Pathways

Background In January we held the first of a series of Guided Pathways forums and discussed the following: Research and data – what problem are we trying to fix? Why Guided Pathways? What is Guided Pathways? Examples of how other institutions are using Guided Pathways Activity around questions and excitements regarding Guided Pathways

Questions from January Forum Do students lose major exploration? How do we engage all faculty…especially associate faculty? Will we have discipline centers (a gathering for faculty/students/staff?) How effective will/can this “mapping” be for developmental students? What are our first steps? Timeline?

Background In February we held the second Guided Pathways forum, which included: An example of possible Meta Majors by TOP Code Group activity of designing other possible Meta Majors Next Steps Guided Pathways Coordinator Online Guided Pathways Information Page Technical Team Meeting

Results of Group Activity in February Forum o Groups were able to move programs and rearrange Meta Majors into areas they thought made more sense. o In general, Agriculture and Natural Resources was left alone! o Every group came up with a different set of Meta Majors and their corresponding programs. o Idea that some programs may be located in more than one Meta Major, such as Heavy Equipment Operator Technician CA. o MORE DISCUSSION IS MOST DEFINITELY REQUIRED!

Questions From February Forum How do we map for part-time and full-time students at the same time? How do we map for developmental education students? What are our students talking about and what does this mean to them? How do we include/will this affect high school students? Should we instead consider pathways based on student passions and interests? Comment: Students are excited about comparing similar career paths based on income and length of time to complete.
