2. What is universal screening? Universal screening is generally conducted three times per year to identify or predict students that may be academically at risk. Universal screening assessments are typically brief and conducted with all students at a grade level.

3. State Requirement Section 59-155-150 of the Read to Succeed Act states: Every student entering publicly funded kindergarten beginning in the academic year 2014–15 will be administered a readiness assessment by the 45 th day of the school year and during the last 45 days of the school year. Students will participate in the Developmental Reading Assessment 2nd Edition PLUS (DRA2 PLUS), selected by the State Department of Education.

4. More About DRA2 PLUS The DRA2 PLUS is administered individually to each 5K student by the teacher and takes about 20 minutes. This assessment is based on what research indicates as key characteristics and behaviors of good readers. The DRA2 determines each student’s independent reading level with an evaluation of three components of reading: reading engagement, oral reading fluency, and comprehension. The assessment reflects skills that are predictive of future reading success and offers guidance to teachers for tailoring instruction to children’s specific needs.
