Assessment for Learning Evaluate Learning Styles Using Formative and Summative Assessments

Green would be students which understand the concepts and ideas being taught and are able to teach another students. Yellow students have trouble understanding. Red students are completely lost. What a brilliant idea to have students help other students. Perhaps they can help explain thing as they understand it and they can share their knowledge with the yellow and red.

Formative assessments basically are used to tell you what level of understanding a child has. Formative assessments can be used to determine what level a child is on and help them advance from that point. Formative assessments can be used to help children advanced. As noted in the text, children can be broken up into groups and work based on their individual level.

Summative assessments are tests which grade the level of understanding of a child. Summative assessments, as noted in the text, consist of standardized testing, tests, district assessment as well as certifications. I do not really care for summative assessments because I feel there are many people who do not test well yet they know the material.

If formative and summative assessments are used together, this will be beneficial to students. Before students take a test and fail or do poorly because they do not know or understand they can be given a formative assessments. Before test taking happens, students can be given the chance to work on the areas that they need further understanding in. If formative assessments are used and properly demonstrated, students can do well on summative assessments.

An example of formative assessment is quizzes, running record reading assessment, thumbs up or thumb down, journal reflection and show and response. Quizzes are small’s tests which gage the understanding of the student. Running record reading assessment is testing reading levels and are able to choose a book which is at their level. Thumbs up or thumbs down is when a student understands, they put their thumbs for understanding and down when they do not understand. Journal reflection is when students write a personal blog about what their perspective is on their learning. Show and response is students take quick assessments and are immediately graded. Summative assessments are any rang of graded tests.
