2. WHO CAN GO ABROAD? Anyone who finds a way to meet their graduation requirements Second semester sophomores, but also sometimes possible for juniors Summer: Any year!

3. WHAT CAN I TAKE? Anything* except LitHum or CC *anything that you can find and get approved as equivalent Usually easiest to take more general classes (econ, math, statistics, mechanics, etc) Technical or engineering “core” requirements Need professor’s approval that the foreign course is equivalent to the one taught at Columbia Dean Brovman can help with these Non-technical requirements CSA Adviser approves these Might be able to take one Global Core class

4. WHERE CAN I GO? Anywhere* you want *Anywhere you can find the courses you need and that the OGP deems as a legitimate academic institution OGP has list of suggested universities, but this is not an exhaustive list Columbia Programs (Barcelona, Beijing, Berlin, Kyoto, Paris, Kenya and more) Any other university or program you find that works and is deemed acceptable by the OGP No set template for going abroad Easier to start with where you want to go and then see if there’s a university there that will work

5. HOW DO I DO IT? Student  OGP  CSA  OGP And SEAS Global Programs (Dean Brovman) at any point along the journey Decide what you want to do (student) Speak with OGP, SEAS Global Programs Online research (both OGP and other sources) Clearance process (OGP and CSA) Paperwork: everything ends at the OGP

6. 1. STUDENT Figure out what you want to do Where do you want to go? What language will you be speaking? Foreign programs taught in English do not have a language requirement for SEAS students Student will need to meet the language requirements of the specific program (if not taught in English)

7. 2. OFFICE OF GLOBAL PROGRAMS Go talk to someone! Figure out possible options Clarify process Consider plausibility of going abroad Start your study abroad profile/application through the OGP website This is also the only way to access the clearance form you will eventually need

OFFICE OF GLOBAL PROGRAMS Turn in all paperwork Actually apply to your program “Apply” to study abroad through Columbia (complete your profile on OGP website, meet with OGP regional advisor, and turn in Study Abroad Registration Form) All clearance forms due October 15th for spring semester abroad and March 15 th for fall abroad (April 15 th for summer abroad). And if you’re not going on a Columbia program (Barcelona, Beijing, Berlin, Kyoto, Paris), you also need to apply to your specific university/program!

12. WHAT ABOUT MY GRADES? What do I need for credit? The equivalent of a C Columbia programs Grades affect your GPA and are on your transcript Other programs Do not go into your GPA Classes you took show up on your transcript as transfer credits (like AP credits) Grades WILL be reported to graduate programs or any other organization that wants your complete academic record – the grades don’t just disappear!

13. WHAT ARE MY CC CLASSMATES TELLING ME THAT DOESN’T APPLY TO ME? Rigorous language requirement (4 semesters minimum!) SEAS students only need to meet a language requirement if their program requires it (for example, if it’s taught in the foreign language) Regional course requirements SEAS students don’t need to take a regional course while abroad/before going – but it is recommended! Course equivalency forms SEAS students need to get professors to sign off on any technical courses

14. FINANCIAL STUFF Your financial situation should not change if you go abroad during the semester You still pay Columbia tuition no matter where you go Your parental and personal contributions should not change dramatically Summer financial aid is a different story Talk to OGP, fellowships office, and financial aid advisor about opportunities for summer funding

15. SUMMER ABROAD Study abroad Wide variety of programs available (both Columbia and non- Columbia) Talk to a regional advisor about what is out there! Internships Another good way to go abroad Resources: CCE website, Columbia Experience Overseas, international alumni clubs, etc Talk to people! There’s no template for summers abroad
