3 Central Nervous System ● The central nervous system (CNS) interprets messages from other nerves in the body and stores some of these messages for later use ● Coordinates and influences the activity of all multicellular organisms ● Consists mainly of the brain and spinal cord -Cerebrum: interprets signals from the body and forms responses such as hunger or pain -cerebellum: coordinated movements -brain stem: connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls most of the basic activities required for life (such as reflexes, breathing, and heart functions)

4 Peripheral Nervous System The system that transfers messages from the central nervous system and to other organs. The system is divided into 2 other systems the somatic and autonomic systems. There are 2 types of cells in the Peripheral Nervous System the 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves that carry information to the sensory cell, and a motor cell in the CNS.

5 Somatic System The somatic system is composed of nerves that connect to the skin, sensory organs, and skeletal muscle. It is responsible for all voluntary body movement. It is responsible for hearing, touch, and sight.

6 Autonomic System -division of the peripheral nervous system that controls involuntary functions such as blood pressure and the rate of breathing -part of the nervous system that supplies the internal organs -divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic system

8 From Stimulus to Response  Peripheral nerves enter and exit through openings in the vertebra  Within the vertebra, each nerve separates into dorsal roots and ventral roots  Dorsal roots - Consists of sensory fibers  Ventral roots - Consists of motor nerve fibers  Autonomic nerve cell bodies run along in a chain parallel to the spinal cord and inside the vertebrae

10 Neuron A neuron is a nerve cell that gathers and transmits electrochemical signals. They have the same characteristics and parts of other cells, but because they are electrochemical, they can transmit signals over long distances and pass messages to each other.
