Classification of Matter

Matter can be divided into pure and impure particle arrangement- A pure substance is anything that contains only one type of matter, so it is ‘all the same’ A mixture is physical blend of two or more substances that are not chemically combined, so it is ‘something and something else’ Classification of Matter

Element – The simplest forms of matter. – Composed of identical atoms – Located on the periodic table ex: copper wire, aluminum foil Classification of Matter So, is an element a pure substance or a mixture?

Classification of Matter Compound – composed of 2 or more elements in a fixed ratio – properties differ from those of individual elements – EX: table salt (NaCl), water (H 2 O) So, is this salt a pure substance or a mixture?

A mixture is a combination of two or more substances in which the substances retain their distinct identities. 1. Homogenous mixture – composition of the mixture is the same throughout. Can be separated by physical means 2. Heterogeneous mixture – composition is not uniform throughout. Can be separated by physical means Classification of Matter So, is a pure substance and a mixture the same thing?

Classification of Matter Determine if each drawing represents a mixture, a compound, or an element.

Physical means can be used to separate a heterogeneous mixture into its pure components. magnet 1.Distillation Used to separate a liquid from a soluble solid or two liquids with very different boiling points. 2.Filtration Used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid 3.Crystallization separation that results in pure solid particles 4.Chromatography – separates bases on the mobile phases tendency to travel across the surface of a material Classification of Matter

a.Filtration b.Distillation c.Chromatography d.Chromatography Separation of Mixtures a.

Matter Flowchart MATTER Can it be physically separated? Homogeneous Mixture (Solution) Heterogeneous Mixture Compound Element MIXTUREPURE SUBSTANCE yes no Can it be chemically decomposed? no yes Is the composition uniform? no yes
