12 Physical Health Nearly 80% of students saw a primary care doctor and/or a dentist for a check up in the last year 25.1% of students discussed healthy eating and physical activity and 7.1% discussed ways to cope with sadness at their last checkup 36.4% get 8+ hours of sleep a night 4.1% were forced to have sexual intercourse when they didn’t want to (10% in 2009)

18 School Environment/Culture 4.9% were offered, sold or given illegal drugs on school property in the last year (21% in 2009*) 18.7% were bullied and 4.9% were threatened with a weapon on school grounds in the last 12 months 18.4% skipped 1+ days of school in the last 4 weeks 29.7% of students find school work meaningful 88.9% of students feel safe at school 57.9% of students believe teachers are caring and encouraging 78.5% have an adult to go to for help with a serious problem

21 Recommendations by WSCC Component Nutrition Environment and Services – Make healthy food choices the status quo throughout the district (policy, process and practices), maximize impact of school garden, lead by example Health Services – Incorporate universal mental health screenings in well-child checkups, make sure students with identified needs are getting follow up care Counseling, Psychological and Social Services – Foster resiliency/coping skills among all students, identify those with greatest needs (mental health/substance abuse) for individual and group supports, start young (ES) Social and Emotional Climate – Help students build connections with adults, create effective systems of support (MTSS), engage students in building meaningful learning pathways

22 Recommendations by WSCC Component Employee Wellness – Offer programs and services that meet needs and interests identified by staff Family Engagement – Improve communication and participation pathways Community Involvement – Identify partnership opportunities and invite participation Physical Education and Physical Activity – Daily PE, outside of school PA, and brain boosts/whole school PA Health Education – Map articulated K-12 program, PD for health educators, skills mastery focus Physical Environment – Make healthy choices easy/only choices, create safe spaces and systems that make students feel safe and supported
